  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Russian anamorphics?

Yes. I tried them and they are actually nice lenses. You need to stop them down one stop but then they are sharp and little ca. If you want some stills pm me.

I don't really understand why anybody would want to shoot anamorphic though. I don't really like the look of it and if you shoot 16:9 you loose half the resolution. The LCD doesn't unsqueeze the image, just gives you a preview of the crop. Big, heavy lenses, too.

Didn't like the look of Close Encounters, Die Hard, Blade Runner, Alien, Amadeus, Heat, Punch Drunk Love, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Unforgiven, The Graduate or Apocalypse Now?

Fair enough...

On an analog medium, such as film, anamorphic squeeze may be desqueezed in theory. However, I am not sure, about the effects of x and y direction on a digital sensor -- anamorphic squeeze will try to compress information optically, where as the sampling in the horizontal direction on a digital sensor has remained the same fixed width. Therefore, to me it appears, that detail that is really small, such as that coming from tree leaves, shrubs, etc., will be lost differently in horizontal and vertical directions. In practise, is the difference perceptible? Well, I do not know.

To be totally honest, I never payed much attention to the look of anamorphics until it got mentioned in this forum (hey, I'm learning here!). Since then I had a closer look and even tried them on my own cam and no, I don't really care for it.

I think anamorphics have been developed to maximise the use of the film negative and they come with certain artifacts such as a streched bokeh and highlights. Personally I think there's a limit to where you would want to replicate 'film look' and I wouldn't want to sacrifice image quality for it.

These are great movies but I don't think it has much to do with anamorphic or not.

But if you like the look, sure go ahead!

Keep attention that most of Russian Market Ebay Sellers are fake or not

Correct Listing detailes .that is why most of them dos not accept paypal

Payments most of them asking for wiretransfer or personal checks.:angry02:

Take Care .:shifty:

I've just bought two lenses from the seller called "Russian Market"

Everything was just fine and the communication was also very good.
There is a big Polish seller who never responds to queries. I don't buy from him...

Using anamorphics with a digital sensor is a pain in the ass. Worthless, in my opinion.

Just came back from a commercial shoot in Cuba where we shoot with these lenses and they are beautiful!!!! As for lost quality, well I wouldn't really worry about that  .

They truly create a filmic feeling and the "softness" that they make can not be re-created with primes (shot both within same commercial because the 35mm ana was bending a little to much in the corners, for frames with straight lines ). I'm amazed how someone can not like anamorphic? For me it's about look not ultimate quality, that quality difference will never be noticed by the audience anyway, but the look will :weight_lift:.

(I'd also like to add that if you're used to shoot film, you know the difference between the video assist flares and what they actually become in the camera. Well if you find yourself to have liked the video assist flares you will like the RED flares. They're not as heavy as the video flares but also not as "little" as the film ones, it's a nice inbetween (I think). It's also quite easy to create them in high light conditions. Got nice flares in broad daylight with quite bright background )

??? Care to elaborate? I found it quite easy as long as you for the time being are down converting to a video converter for anamorphic.

(I'll try to post some images from the shoot later today)

A technician from LA told me... These russian lenses are not accurate at all. And if you have no technical support backing you up, you'll be fried before you know it. The russian glass needs technical service for accuracy, once each time you use them.

I've heard the same.

Sounds very american to me  . They need service of course, you should especially service them when bought the first time. After that it's no different then any other lens of same age.

My source has more than 30 years of experience in this field. Actually, they have the Close Encounters of the Third Kind on their portfolio of work done. But they're assisting indies and no-budget projects too. He was just comparing glass. Mechanically, run off. Without technical service backing you up (low-budget type), it's better to forget, he said.

Yes, the tiny communist political prisoners they use instead of grease need to be replaced periodically as they starve to death........... These lenses are fine, they are used a lot, Ken Rich rents and sells them, there is a ton of info about them on CML and elsewhere if you look. The round fronts are better than the square. I have a ton of Lomo Spherical glass, and I was extremely pleased with the pictures they made on the Red. Same factory, so I would expect good things.

It is a gamble buying lenses from Eastern Europe, for some reason lots of the glass from over there has fungus (probly from being stored in leaky concrete warehouses- when nobody is paying you to do a good job, and your drunk, you can build some astoundingly bad buildings). I've been burned a couple of times, but over all good experiences.

Who said otherwise?

I'm just referring an information received (from a reliable source) about the need for technical support backing you up, once each time you use them. They're used to deal with these lenses, they know them very well. Especially, the anamorphic ones.

I understand. My source is an ARRI technician with equal amount of years behind him. He's helping me with mine.

There's no right or wrong here. It's simply this. Western lenses have most of the time during their life span been regularly serviced. Russians hasn't (at least not all of them). That doesn't mean they're bad it just means that they need usually need an all around service when you purchase them, so in that your correct. BUT it doesn't mean they can't be used without being serviced - they're generally fine and has been serviced by the russians - they just tend to have a different QC then us. As for an indie production you would a lot of the time definitely be fine with "russian" serviced ones. (Edit: If the PL mount will fit the RED camera - russian PL mounts are not always perfect and need to be adjusted) Don't forget that you see the result instantly on RED.

As for the "to have to be serviced every single time" I don't agree. I and a lot of others (as said - check CML) have no problems with them. Especially if you given them a proper service

Sorry for editing all the time - but if you take these lenses and make an X-ray between them and the Hawks you'll find them to be almost identical.

I dont think I've seen any RED anamorphic materials around. anyone got any?

Purchased from this seller

Purchased from this seller

Hi,

Although you can tell by their high feedback they are a pretty good seller, I thought I would mention that i have purchased 2 lenses from this seller (spherical lomos) and they have been just as promised. It took a little while to get the lenses (less time than other russian sellers actually) and I think I had to send a money order to a contact in Canada or something like that which was a bit of a leap of faith. But it all worked out. The focus was a little stiff on one and I think both should be checked and lubricated before use, but nothing different than other used glass I've bought. Just our experience and yours may vary...

Also, a question for Fred or others who have tested the Red with anamorphics - since we aren't using the full width of the sensor for anamorphic on the Red, is there a "crop factor"? In other words is shooting with a 50mm anamorphic giving you the field of view closer to a 75mm anamorphic lens on 35mm film?
