Run & Gun with RED1 at 4K

My latest Run & Gun with RED1 at 4K test:

Here it is an indoor/room test I did today with Rode NTG-3 connected to TRS 1/4-inch input to get the phantom power 48V out from M-Audio Micro Track II that is line out wired at REC mode to RED1.

In that way you'll be able to record at the two devices simultaneously M-Audio Microtrack II and RED1 (at one channel).

On this Run & Gun RED1 rig I will soon add VievFactor's Origo Record stop/start button and Doug Underdahl's Lightweight Rod Support for RED One Camera.

Have a look at the pictures below where you can also find a link to the footage with a sound from the test.

Very Nice !!

Q1: why did you choose M audio MicroTrack II?

I am asking this because I am looking for run&gun audio solutions to go with Scarlet. Completely agree on need to record audio separate to cam and the need for phantom power.

Q2: How long does the Lithium Ion battery in the M-Audio last when supplying phantom to the NTG?

Q1: why did you choose M audio MicroTrack II?

I am asking this because I am looking for run&gun audio solutions to go with Scarlet. Completely agree on need to record audio separate to cam and the need for phantom power.

Q2: How long does the Lithium Ion battery in the M-Audio last when supplying phantom to the NTG?

A1:
- 1/4" TRS audio inputs with 48v phantom power because I still do have old RED1 audio board
and the future of upgrade is uncertain according to void warranty issue with IMS mount installed on my R1.
- Doesn't have built-in microphone that I would not need on RED1.
- Excellent audio quality with external microphones.
- Easy of use.
- Cheaper than competitors for the same audio quality.

A2: Internal battery works about 3 hours with phantom power on.

The microtrack one had two XLR ins on the thing that was sweet, bit upset those are gone from the II. I have the Microtrack I and use it for everything, really nice piece, I set it to 48/24 and that's the most I've needed for audio.

Can't think of other solutions goin up to 96khz that small... then again was happy with it so didn't look further

I was initially planning to go with Marantz PMD660 (about $130 more) and was doubtful of M-Audio's sound quality. If you say its audio is good I will give this one a second look over.

I am sure Scarlets audio board will be fine but I like this inline recorder solution as a backup.

Got another question. Have you had any issues with the Microtrack's (either I or II) audio drifting out of sync on long takes?

And Marantz PDM660 if anyone knows.

Marantz PMD660 is too big to attach on RED1.

I needed one that is light, easy of use, has professional audio quality, has with phantom power for my Rode NTG-3, without own mic, with line out to get in RED1.

MicroTrack II has all that.

Grips..

Grips..

That looks like a great run and gun setup. The only thing that seems odd is the location of the grips... they are so high and so far back. Wouldn't you be more comfortable with them lower and further forward? What's your reason for the placement?

Jeff,

everything is customizable.

It is not fixed rig and you could take off or add what ever you want.

Open to any suggestion.

Sanjin, that's looking pretty sweet. I especially like how you mount that audio box by shoving that XLR connector through the top mount. Clever.

One suggestion is to consider getting a Vlock kit from ET so that you can mount the hard drive in the same place but with isolation so you never drop frames and with a solid mount point so that it could never fall. Those straps look like you could pull the drive right out if you tried.

All your pictures have you wearing that heavy coat. Just how cold is it in Vienna? Don't you ever get to shoot indoors?

:) Hi Mitch,

thanks for your nice suggestions.

I will have a look to order Vlock kit from ET soon.

Also looking forward to get ViewFactor's Origo Record Start/Stop button

and carbon rods 18".

Winter clothes are from Moncler (jacket), Paul Smith (hat), Raf Simons/Lynda Farrow (glasses) that I'm reseller :) .

and is a kind of preparation for snowboard shooting this winter in Austrian Alps (Tyrol and Vorarlberg).

Finally I had a little time last night to shot again one of quick and dirty tests with my RED1.

It's about two and half minutes of footage at 720p.

All is shot at 4K then resized in 2K, edited and then again at 720p HD output for web.

Lens was Canon 50mm FD f/1.2 all wide open @ f/1.2.

Camera was set at 4K, 2:1, 320 ASA, RAW, 25 fps, shutter speed 1/50 (normal) no pushing it.

This is just a purpose test for this fast lens, RED1 DR and sound recorded with Rode NTG-3 mic.

Unfortunately I still have an old audio board.

Because I voided warranty with installing uncertified IMS mount 6 months ago

and RED recently just simply refused to upgrade my camera.

Let me know what you thing about this RED step?

But as I've always been a kind of "guerrilla" and found a solution for my RED1 sound with

Avid/M-Audio MicroTrack II that has balanced ¼” TRS inputs with line inputs and 48V phantom-powered mic preamps.

Simultaneously with it I am able to adjust an extended input gain range and built-in analog input limiter

and also volume for headphones via MicroTrack II that works well with recording mode.

So I'm able to record simultaneously in two channels at RED and MicroTrack II using CompactFlash card

or Microdrive will hold approximately 100 minutes of uncompressed CD-quality 16-bit stereo 44.1kHz WAV files.

Also I'm able to record sound at MicroTrack II during slow motion shots that is not possible with RED1.

In this footage that I wiil open to download during next 48 hours

you will find two historic locations in Vienna's old town center.

Canon50mmFD_FilmMuseum720p.jpg

The first is Palais Pallavicini at Josefplatz 5 that was actually Harry Lime's Apartment in a famous film The Third Man.

That was a place for a short outdoor shot in available light at night.

Canon50mmFD_FilmMuseum720p2.jpg

The second about 150 meters further at the next block is Albertina Museum with department of Film Museum Wien.

That was a place in cafe of Film Museum Wien for indoor shots.

Workflow:

Shot in 4K 2:1 at 320 ASA.

The most of the footage processed at 320 ASA and some with low light at 250 ASA and 500 ASA,

output at Camera RGB and REDLog in HQ ProRes, resized at full Debayer 2K/2:1 in RED Alert.

Edited in FCP and CC in FCP using Sapphire Film Effects plug in that I found better handling CC and post for low-light footage than Apple Color.

There you could play with and "treat" your footage as a film.

Your RAW processed footage starts at negative film copy Kodak 5245 stock

and you output like a print on Kodak 2383 film stock.

You can adjust many things like a CC, input and output gamma, exposure of negative and your print,

scale brights, offset darks, grain amp and details, glow,... etc.

All amazing to achieve a film look of your footage and to escape videoish look.

Sapphire is also available for After Effects and Shake then you could work in 4K.

At the end I would like to thank Filip Antoni Malinowski and Attila Boa for their help to participate in this test.

How do you sync timecode from the Red to a microtrack I or II?

How do you sync timecode from the Red to a microtrack I or II?

-shooter

With a clap (I guess)

I have sound recorded in R3D because phantom power 48V goes to Rode NTG-3 and via Line out from MicroTrack II in record mode sound goes to RED1 and that is actually what you've heard at the clip above.

As an additional channel you can easy "sync" your sound with reference sound from R3D in any sound app like Pro Tools, Apple Soundtrack or Adobe Soundbooth.

Sanjin:
Your footage and the canon lens wide open is impressive. And I imagine if you were able to just stop down a bit, it would give you a few more inches to give a focus puller at least a couple of inches of latitude. Many thanks for sharing.
Joel

Joel,

the test was just about that A WIDE OPEN AND HOW MUCH YOU CAN GET FROM THAT(?!).

As you know well the rule of the thumb in that situation you can only

1. Open up the shutter by a half-stop to get 270 degrees instead of 180 degrees (or more) and increase ASA.

2. Bring the light.

Depth of field rule of thumb.

My wide open tests here are a part of learning skills with RED1 in many possible extreme situations

when you shoot run&gun hand-held and without AC.

And of course many out of focus mistakes are included in that type of shooting.

But one when you learn and skill enough you will get it right in many situations when you need to shoot a wide open (available light).

Also it was a bit about sound with condenser mic on the cam.

4K S35 DOF cinema journalism.

No any compromise and compensation to downgrade your DOF to 3K or 2K (only if you need to shoot a higher speed for slow-mo)

as many here talking about as a solution.

That's all.
