Hi,

Looking for a basic Wireless FF, for some shoots when budget is tight.

Was looking at those first generation of RT Motion, the Pro-MK2 and the DJI Focus used.

From what I can tell till now:

DJI is more modern and still going, the motor is smaller and more compact. My AC told me he used it and he likes it. I've heard/read the motor is not that reliable.

The RT motion could be FIZ and seems more robust, but the motors are bulky and the hand controller looks pretty basic.

What your guys takes on it?

Which one would you choose?

Thanks.

DJI motors are not reliable at all. They get fried time to time due to internal voltage transistors set to match 14V. When powered from V-Locks, which at full capacity have ~15.3V, the motor gets fried sometimes. Easy fix for an electrician, but a hassle for others.

I'd say RT Motion is more preferabe solution, but still not a perfect workhorse.

Hey Alex, did you open one?

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the answer, the more I think about it, the more I tend to lean on saving up a bit more and buying the new Tilta FF or something more modern.

I did see DJI have a new version of their FF. Even though, I do have good contacts with electricians, so I do not see an issue to fix a motor, is there any way to power them other then d-tap?

We have used a NUMBER of lower budget wireless focus options, and have been burned by ALL of them.

You get what you pay for.

Once we jumped to RT Motion, it's been smooth sailing ever since. Plus it's integration into the RED ecosystem (via MDR, etc) is AMAZING.

There is NO COMPARISON in my opinion. RT is in a whole other class from the others.

I own both. I got in on a group buy for the RT Motion and got a full FIZ. RT Motion with Lattitude is the best for RED DSMC2 cameras and i love it. it's pricey so if you can afford RT Motion (now called Teradek RT), by all means go that route. I don't know about the older models, as it says in the instruction manual that they don't support 3.0 or earlier anymore, so everything they have is for is 3.1 or later..... I have to say for its price range you can't beat the DJI focus. it's better than the redrock micro or cinegear's WirelessFF, I think.. My DJI motor and hand unit has never failed me. power it via a special cable i had made by Gotham Sound that plugs direclty into the 2pin Lemo port in the back of my XL Module. It's been rock solid on all my shoots. I've never had any issues that the others have mentioned, maybe i got a good one? I don't know... I do take care of it, try not to beat it up or expose it to sand and salty sea air... I've used it on heavy lenses, like the Alura Zooms, its just great. Granted, I'm selling my DJI Focus kit by the way (I have up for sale on reduser, just look for it or message me.), but I'd keep it if I didn't buy the RT FIZ, its a very handy item to have.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your reply! The question is if you're also talking on the Pro-MK2 or the 3.1 new version? I'm specifically interested to know about the Pro-MK2 if you ever used it?

Thanks for your reply, I know the new 3.1 model is great, I'm talking only about the old RT model.
