Hey guys, I was wondering what other people were considering for rental prices for the RRM Mattebox and the Viewfactor wireless FF? I'm thinking $35 a day for the Mattebox--considering what it costs and what an Arri rents for. $50 a day for the FF. While I keep thinking that $50 is too low when considering other wireless FF units, I keep remembering that it costs ALOT less then other units.

What are you all thinking?

Matthew

No one has either of them yet would be my guess.

I think those prices are a little high, considering I can rent an arri matte box for around $50 and it retails for around $5,000.

True to a point. But my guess is that the Arri is a bit more rugged and will last longer - especially if renting out to third parties. I'm hoping to pay for mine fairly quick, then consider price discounts.

I think the rr mattebox should be included, The only way i'd use one was if it's free. If you tried to charge me anything than I would ask for a real mattebox. A $4k Bartech system rents for $100 per day so $50 for the view factor sounds about right, but again, until it's proven, I don't know a single AC that would agree to do a job with one.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Have you actually used a RRM mattebox on a job yet though? I may be wrong also, but I think that little mattebox is going to hold up longer and do a better job then other people are giving it credit for. Around here, because it's 99% a video town, people are not even used to having a mattebox--or having a cheap clip-on mattebox. Otherwise, I would have gone ahead and bought a nicer mattebox. Heck, the closest place to even rent an arri mattebox is 170 miles away--and they are like $60 a day. BTW, what makes the Arri a "real" mattebox compared to the RRM?

Hey there Matthew,

I am not knocking the RR matte box, it's just that if some one is charging me money for a rental package, I would expect the industry standard stuff. I can see using the RR matte box for your own productions, but I would be pissed if it showed up on a rental package. I guess it depends on your market, and the expectations of clients. Again, if you are renting out a set of Nikons then I guess no one would complain about the mattebox.

I think a big part of perception as far as operators and ACs is just working with what your familiar with. Different doesn't equal bad, but the stink of cheap is hard to get off of stuff.

I'm of the same mind as Nick. I don't think people would be willing to pay extra money for the RR matte box. I didn't plan on charging extra for it, and I'm not knocking it. As I posted before, I have one on order. If you look at normal cost/rental rates for matte boxes, the RR would come in at around six or seven dollars. Of course you can charge anything you'd like.
