  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPZ 17-50mm 5K vignette benchmark

Has Red considered the possibility of a "small modification" to the lens design, to make it cover the Epic sensor? Like Angenieux did with their DP zooms?

thanks for the test Rémi!
Anybody has test the 18-50 RZ yet?

What did Angenieux do with their DP zooms? I've used regular Optimos (15-40 & 28-76) and DPs (16-42 & 30-80) on Epic 5KFF and found that none of them vignetted. None of these lenses would have been modified by the rental company specifically for the Epic.

I also tested the long Optimos (17-80 & 24-290) on the Epic and found that they both vignetted, which is a well known fact. Apparently Angeniueux are building a 1.2x extender to solve the problem.

BTW yes, Epic 5KFF is wider than S35 (ANSI) by 2.8mm. Although the diagonals are not all that different due to the different aspect ratio.

I forget, i think its 4.5k(?) seems to be the winner. high res, big surface area, and JUST within the image circle of pretty much every lens ever made...

On the EPIC product page, only 4.5K 2.4:1 is announced ; I think this format only exists to match with the RED ONE.

But considering those vignetting lenses, it would be great to also have 4.5K 2:1, 4.5K 16:9 and also some kind of "5K 16:9" (= 4800x2700). Of course, there's always the possibility to shoot with frame guides and crop in post. Just thinking of faster ways. :smile5:

On some lenses a close focus causes vignetting. I have an old angenieux zoom that will only cover when the focus is greater than 10 feet at 30mm up to 250mm. Go figure.

Hi there,

We bought a RED PRO ZOOM 17-50mm with our EPIC-M. We are trully satisfied of it, it produce amazing pictures. But I read all over reduser that it only vignette between 17mm & 18.5mm at 5K FF. That's clearly not what I've experienced, so I made a small test to show you what I've got.

Test conditions

I took shots of a white paper at 17mm, ~20mm, 25mm, ~30mm, ~35mm & 50mm (some are approximations since there're not written on the lense). Each shot was taken in camera in 5K full frame, 5K 2:1 and 5K 2.4:1. I then applied a gamma curve in Redcine-X :

Our colorist use this kind of gamma curve everyday, so I consider it as a real usage test.

Aperture ~F/4, ISO 800, Redcolor2 & Redgamma 2. Except for the gamma curve, Redcine-X in full default options.

Here are the results as 15% scaled JPG. You can download a 430mb zip file with full res tiff here.

Conclusion

Although it become less and less noticeable, our RPZ 17-50mm vignettes at every focal in every 5K format. Vignette totally disappears in 4KHD.

I dont see any of this with our RED ZOOMS other than at 17mm. worse with filters and matt box on..
but got to and beyond 20mm.... nothing!

Feel sorry for you Remi... But hey! blow the image up 5 to 10%... ya good.
So you get stuck with 4800 pixel width instead of 5000... :))))) your still miles ahead!
