Keep in mind that the wider Mysterium-X sensor will yield a wider relative field of view for any given lens. A 50mm at 4K will act like a 40mm lens at 5K... and so on.

Jim,

Do you really mean that a 50mm on the Epic X 5K sensor will have the same field of view as a 40mm on a Red One 4K sensor?

Yes... close.

I know how the geometry works, I just meant that I think you got it backwards in your first post . . . . :)

On another front, I'm still wrestling with whether or not to place a deposit on the RRP's . . . . for me it hinges on when the 18 is ready, because I can't use them until it is . . . . otherwise it's a no-brainer, especially as I plan to upgrade to Epic X as soon as it's available.

For "not attending NAB", Red did a great job of feeding our addiction - the RRP's kicked ass on the projector, and the Epic and Scarlet mockups had even more impact in person than in renders, though I love the renders. And the reel in 4K was absolutely stunning. The Reduser event was much more helpful to us in the Red community than an exhibit at the show, IMO. There was plenty of space, and it was like a Red-themed trade show. Can't beat that.

Best,

Hey Jim,
Can you please give this new "5k" EpicX size a name besides 5k? David Mullen, Evin Grant and I were thinking "x35" or something of that nature. Reason being that one day you, or someone else, will want to release a 6k, 7k or 8k sensor of this new size. Plus, it makes little sense to label 2/3", s35 and ff35 by their physical sensor size, then randomly call the other one by its pixel quantity.

I agree that 5K is confusing and a moving target that doesn't really represent the physical size as pixel sizes change.

OK... how about x35? How does that sound? :-)

Maybe R35, X35, or ??? A vote?

I vote for X35, as it's tied to the Epic X,

I like "super-duper 35", which is of course better than just plain "super 35".

Thanks for bringing this up Shawn we were just talking about this today.. its an important topic that had the opportunity to become very confusing.

Would be very helpfull... by the way x35 sounds good!!

I'm glad this came up, I've been talking about this a lot lately.

We should stick to sensor sizes. This lens will cover FF35, that lens will cover S35. 'This lens covers 3K, that lens covers 5K' is just asking for confusion.

Every time somebody mentions "does this lens cover 5K?" I think "It does today 'cause we're only talking about the S35 Scarlet. But number of photosites is (largely) unrelated to physical size, so tomorrow if somebody releases a 36x24mm 5K camera you're on your own."

EX35 -epic x 35, RX35 - Red X 35

But if you dont like those then x35 sounds all good to me.

:D

Thanks for beign so open about the topic guys, you really know how to make feel like part of the team. :)

MX35 sounds like a Japanese car, RX35 sounds like a British one and X35 sounds like porn for the thirtysomethings. There's got to be something along the lines of Vistavision.

Mmm, I'll have a think...
