  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPP footage

RPPs arrived today. Planning to have some footage up by the end of the week. Here are a few pics from my iphone.

congrats ken!!. what would you say the tallest lense is? i have a pelican 1610
and wondering if they will fit.

thanks

holy crap in a hat basket!! them is some big primes. that only leaves me with an
inch of foam top and bottom

That is with the lens caps on. He wanted the measurement to check for case size for storage/transport. Wouldn't do that without the caps.

That's what I thought. Just want to make sure the right measurements because I'm thinking about two carry on cases pelican 1510. Are the 50, 85, 100mm RPPs about 6 inches?

Actually my first measurement is a bit off. Looking at it again I'm going to say the 25 and 35 are just shy of 9 inches (with caps on). The 50, 85 and 100 are 7 1/2 inches (with caps on).

Thanks for the info, Ken. I like the RED Pro Lens Case but it's not for carry on.

looks like the 1620 would be a better option.

Thanks again

I'm curious what you would use to carry them on?

When I get mine, I will put them into a Pelican 1620. (I also work in the jungles, sandy beaches, etc etc etc) This case is way too large to carry on though.

I own a 1620 as well, but I want to go with carry on cases for my RPPs. Since I travel very often with my family, my wife or one of my daughters carry the second carry on case. So I'll probably buy a second 1510 or use my 1520 plus 1510.

Until I find a permanent solution I've got them in a Pelican 1550 with the customizable inserts. This case is small enough to hand carry the lenses on safely. I wouldn't ship them in this configuration.

The 50, 85 and 100 are lined up at the rear. The 25 and 35 are lying flat in front.

Please excuse the iphone pics.

We're a bit off topic here. But Ken, the 1550 is 7.60" like 1510 that would mean I could store the 50, 85 and 100 vertical in my 1510 as well. I know, it's surely not for shipment but for carry on it would be fine.

Any comments on the 50mm? Looks like a load of breething to me.

I only had them briefly and I focused on the wides. However after reading what the more experienced and knowledgeable guys reviewing them at SALT had to say about the 50mm I now feel more comfortable to say that it was easily the least impressive of the bunch.

The image matches the rest without a problem, but there was something about it that didn't feel as awesome as the rest. In SALT the reviewers said it had the most CA, far more than the rest anyway. The prototype I played with did breath quite a bit... not sure if it a bit biased because we watch it after seeing the breathing in the wides, which have practically no breathing at all! So it might be a bit unfair...

It seems the production 50mm had some of the CA removed. Based on that one may wonder if there were other improvements. I'd ask the guys who already got their production sets for more accurate info. Maybe they can post their own rack focuses and hopefully a bit more testing to go with it.

This is surprising-- I figured a "perfect" 50mm would be the least problematic to design.

As you all probably know, in the DSLR world, all the manufactureres have excellent 50mm f/1.4 lenses for only a few hundred $. While the fast 85s, 25s etc are more expensive, due to a more complicated design.

Hoping the production 50mm RPPs are as good as the others in the set!

Don't be alarmed though, it is a great lens.

My guess is that they were rushing to make the trickier lenses as perfect as possible and left the 50mm for the end since it would be the easiest. I wouldn't be surprised if the one people are getting now has the same exact amount of CA. Hopefully it also has a little bit less breathing.
