  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPP 18mm Flares

It's not a significant problem, I've never had a case of it I could not easily cure with some grip work. I've seen the Optimo Rouge lenses flare in a similar way. Also not a serious problem with the Rouges.

I think it is. I've had quite a few reports from DPs complaining about the peculiar flares in the 18mm, 25mm and 50mm RPPs. One liked them, but the rest of them thought they were annoying.

The Red Primes represent a fantastic value in the cine-lens world.

I totally agree, but I'm still having a lens-tech look into my 18mm soon to investigate this problem.

I love these flares when they are in motion. But set up a nice static wide the other day (w/ 25mm) and it was a bit distracting for the picture i was trying to take.

Guess they are hit or miss.

I wish they flared more like this old cooke 20mm-60mm 3.1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4jngW9Xix0 watch for 2:57 when the flares are in motion on the stage.

I find the reds like this just the color seperation of the spectrum is harder and feels more mechanic.

This old 20-60mm was a a little B@stard for focus and back focus, but gave the best flares.

If you diffuse the red's with a classic soft, or mist it smooths out the flares.

Overall I like the RPP's flares

I shot a feature in China last fall and I used RPP's for the first time, mainly because the edge to edge/vignetting characteristics on the widest were great at 4.5k. But I did have a difficult time getting them to flare nicely. I found those rings a bit artificial, so it took a bit of wrangling to find the right stop, focal length, etc to get what I consider a dramatic but not distracting flare. Luckily, it wasn't a big flare show, so the lenses served me well. But if I could've had the flare characteristics of Mk3's, I would've taken it in a heartbeat (unfortunately, at certain stops the Mk 3 18mm displayed certain vignetting characteristics I didn't like. Being a show with a lot of overcast skies, so we passed on them....).
