Shot a few things last week and it was working surprisingly well. Smooth like butter.

In this particular config I don't get much tilt up because the battery bumps the motor, or down because the front weight of the lens.

However, I can get full tilt when mounted upside down it balances perfectly* (without the monitor or battery). Waiting on a battery plate to offboard power and a monitor cable. Not sure where or how to mount them to the Ronin S, but I'll get there!

Just happy I can whip my Gemini around now like I used to with my A7 setup.

Happy to answer any questions.

You think it can work with a cinema lens and moving the screen and the battery?

Link? Wasn't aware there is a lens with built in follow focus motors. Many questions

I going to own both of these so looking for posts of others set-ups. Will do same after current project wraps

Nicolas, yes it can certainly work with a cinema lens. Upsidedown, it balances perfectly on the ronin without the battery or monitor with the sigma 18-35. I'm testing right now with my Sigma 85 1.4, which is heavy, and it just needs some counterweights on the rear.

My mistake, I'm using the ronins knob to control the follow focus. I'm going to try rigging the red side grip focus control wheel to control the lens focus. Maybe I can skip the follow focus? Never really tried the approach.

it's really too bad auto focus never worked well with red for this type of thing. ive shot two projects now on the ronin-s and my a7III because of the aufocus tracking. the first one was a one take dance video and the other was just a few b=roll shots with it. have to say, i hate rigs, especially easy rig type things, but the ronin s was pleasurable and super fun, especially once you know how to get into different modes on the fly. i had to even disengage the motor for 5 seconds during the shot so i could go upside down, then reengage.

+1 Hope they will get there with the DSMC3 but I'm afraid they will listen to more classic cinematographers that have AC1 and 2 and 3. So this won't be a priority.
I'm using the Ronin-S with the A7III and the 24-70 2.8GM. Great combo, impressive lens (for that price).
Love how far the still photography for video has come with the face detection, eye tracking and "smart" autofocus. It's not yet there but I bet that within 5 years we will definitly be there.

what focus motor are you using to plug into the s? the dji one?

Yes, it's the standard DJI wireless follow focus motor that comes in the kit. You can buy it separately for cheap (which is what I did). However, you need to make sure it has the most recent firmware installed, which you can only do if you have the wireless control unit (a friend had one). It was interesting though that the motor itself had the most recent firmware, but I had to update the firmware on the new ronin. Then you connect one of DJI's control cables and the wheel controls the follow focus. Perfecto.

While classic cinematographers are crucial, now that Ravens etc are being sold in Apple stores, the broad consumer market will expect it. All DSLR/mirrorless options are beginning to have face tracking AF. The Canon C200 AF face tracking touch screen interface is astounding. And you can always turn off AF for traditional use. The largest hurdle I see is sidestepping or licensing Canon's AF algorithms.

Smaller setup to run a canon 24 f2.8 pancake and 50 1.8 stm, and even a zeiss contax 28 f2.8. Redvolt-V and 150gr or 250gr counterweight.

I use a smallhd FOCUS for a cleaner setup, ora I can even mount the RED dsmc2.

WOW! Guys! That Ronin-S is a beast when I'm looking at these photos here. RED + Ronin-S + Sigma 18-35? Killer combo. I'm thinking about Ronin-S more a more now
