Hey guys I am looking for a monitor recomendation, I just got a ronin m and I'm looking for a monitor to go with a gh4, I was thinking about even trying the panasonic app but think its gonna be not so great.

I have a pix e5 that works great but that will be on a stationary camera (I do event videography)

Worried that the black magic assist is made poorly. Thoughts? Oh and I don't need recording capabilities.
Also thinking about the ninja 4.3

went with ninja

We just bought two Atomos Ninja Flames, we love them if you're looking for a recorder/monitor combo. If you need light weight, we also bought the 7" Ikan that was just released. It's not the best monitor ever but it's light and has a pretty good picture.

yeah I dont need recording, so just grabbed up the ninja 4.3, its mainly for framing the shots ect

Hard to beat the 702 SmallHDs if the weight isn't too much. I still use the DP4 monitor with my GH4 when it's on my Helix most of the time. It's so light.

I know it was just out of my price range, I probably would have gone with a second pix e5 without the pix xlr attachement then to get the 10 bit color, such a huge difference

yeah haha, i ll have to see how it works on this shoot friday, its a toss in with a wedding I am doing, saves the date video and I want to get some good orbit shots ect of the couple.

If the focusing is useless on it I will get the 701 most likely and use that with my gh4 when shooting reception footage, the evf on the gh4 has left me wanting to get a real evf for a while now, if the small hd 701 can double duty then its worth it for me

you guys are killing me, canceled the atomos and went with the small hd 701. I do alot of high shots that I cant see my viewfinder so hopefully this will also help with that

SmallHD over the Atomos Flame?? NNNNOOOOO lol. Flame is by far better and the HDR is great as well as high brightness.... It's focus assist is some of the best available and if you need a 4K recorder, there you go.. Color will be more accurate on the Flame vs the SmallHD. But the SmallHD is a bit cheaper. Unless you get the 702 Bright you're only getting a 720p monitor which isn't great for critical focus. I'd personally recommend the Flame anyday..

haha and the monitors get bigger and more expensive! Since its only for monitoring I am not worried about much more than peaking and if there are guides great. If I moved up to the price of the flame I would get a second pixe 5, the build quality is insane, 10 bit, add on for xlr audio if I ever needed and I already have another speed drive.

This is strictly to get focus fast and keep framing on wedding intros and first dances ect.

I am not sweating the color and exposure, I shoot still film with no meter for fun, so I am pretty good at gauging exposure. I white balance and use a color checker passport in really bad reception lighting situations.

Thanks again for all the input, I think the small hd will be great for my high mono pod shots, Ill attach it half way down the mono pod to keep frame for dance footage

well I had issues with the gh4 and small hd, made multiple calls to small hd to help, they never called back, returned and went with another pix e5h like I should have in the first place

Can't go wrong with a smallhd with 1000 nits! If you're on a super tight budget though, I've actual used what's called a "Feel World" (whatever the hell that means?) monitor, and have been absolutely impressed with it's lightness, durability, and image quality, especially for $150 (hdmi only). It's a great, ultra cheap, option for DSLR shooting for sure.
