  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon 24mm?

Ok, found it. It was the standard 8mm lens with detachable hood. But maybe their VDSLR version is next.

I had the 14 2.8
2 problems:
1-has a fixed hood petal (no mattebox, light enters from the sides)
2-can not install filters
I have seen for Tokina 11-16 (beautiful lens)

I do love my Tokina 11-16!

And, Patrick, thanks for finding that. Although I still can't imagine being able to use a matte box with it. :-)

I have the 35mm f1.4 and the 24mm f1.4 and for the money they're amazing.

I used to have the Zeiss 25mm f2.8 which was a superior lens but it was a Nikon version and I wanted a set of lenses that would focus in the correct cine direction. The 24mm Samyang has pretty much become the stock lens I leave on the camera. I have the Tokina 11-16mm too which is great for what it does but for video I very rarely need to use it.

In general (not just 24mm) how much softer are Samyang/Rokinon lenses wide-open and what's the lowest f-stop/t-stop that they really dial in their sharpness?

From my own subjective experience the Rokinon 85mm is actually reasonably sharp wide open, comparing well with lenses a LOT more expensive. Sharpens up plenty when stopping down too. The biggest improvement I see when stopping down is that aberrations are reduced as well as the sharpness improvement. I'd not hesitate to use it wide open, and by f/2 it's very nice.

I only have the 35mm and 85mm (which I bought used off someone on this message board) and they are very usable wide open. The 35mm f1.4 has almost spectacularly good micro-contrast and corner resolution wide open but it has a bit of veiling and purple CA in overexposed areas that stopping down takes care of. The lens is sharpest by an f4/f5.6 split, but there's a bit of lateral CA in the corners (maybe not an issue on Super35 so much) that doesn't improve much while stopping down--and there might be slightly sharper lenses at f5.6 (the 35mm L, maybe?) if you're counting pixels but wide open it's surprisingly great.

The 85mm is a little softer in general but really quite good overall even wide open. Handily beats the 85mm AI Nikkor but it has less character. Similar overall to the 35mm, but not as sharp. There's a tiny bit of cat's eye bokeh on full frame under some circumstances and background bokeh is very good but foreground bokeh is more nervous.

Both lenses suffer from pretty bad flare relative to other modern lenses, though contrast is good in general. I would not hesitate to use either wide open except for the obvious difficulties it will pose for your AC. Oddly both lenses aren't much better at f2 than they are wide open and only really get great at f4, but they're so good wide open it doesn't much matter.

Maybe you can also check out Matthew Duclos' Blog about it. He compares it with a Zeiss.

Does anyone know of a UK importer for Rokinon/Samyang... amazon.co.uk carry the standard 35mm, 85mm.. but nowhere seems to be advertising the cine-versions, and the import duty from B&H adds another $250 onto the price

In germany they are also traded as Walimex brand from foto-walser.de
And then there is a lot of eBay pro sellers

Maybe there you can find a cheaper option

You're most welcome Gary.
In Europe it's sometimes easier to try the other brand names. Only "trade off" : the lens always sports a different ugly logo ;)

I think this is the list (and I guess vivitar is also easier to get in Europe)
Samyang/Rokinon/Vivitar/Polar/Bower/Opteka/Falcon/Walimex

AbelCine sells the Rokinon lenses. I was rather impressed with the glass, particularly at the price. The cinevised versions work fairly well and are still an amazing deal at the price.

I just read Duclos' impressions; seems to be pretty much what I'm looking for -- a used 24, 35, 85 f1.4 set for essentially the price of one ZF/ZE is a pretty easy decision for low-light on a budget. Plus, with low-light (situations where you'd *need* to shoot at 1.4) the purple fringing would probably be the least of your problems.

I have a feeling the market will be flooded with the regular/stills versions when the Cine/Geared versions are released, so I'm going to try to wait until then.

You won't see my 35 and 85 on the market... I am going to have Matthew Duclos cinevized them!!

just ordered one :) hope they dont cancel my order. In the picture there is the picture of the adapter as well. Hope its the canon version though! Will keep you guys posted
