Roger Deakins Document: Case Study

Decided to take it down so as to save anyone from confusion.

Looking at these notes out of context is like trying to understand a conversation only hearing one half of it.

Thanks for looking

I appreciated your take on the scenes Patrick. Love your passion for cinema my man. Keep posting

Marc you are correct a small disclaimer could have helped, but I'm sad to see Patrick take down his analysis. I thought it was thought provoking and intelligent.
I agree, I thought Patrick's notes were interesting, but I just thought it needed a disclaimer at the head. I have learned over the years (through painful experience) not to second-guess DPs, especially big-time name DPs. It can quickly turn into a "Woody Allen/Marshall McLuhan Experience," if you know that scene from Annie Hall. All that needed to be said was, "hey, I have no real idea of how this scene was lit, but here's what I think."

I meant no harsh criticism, only to say that sometimes what you think you see in a shot is not necessarily what's happening there. Sometimes there's tons of tweaking going on, sometimes it's 99% the DP's work. The stuff on Deakins in AC is often very illuminating (forgive the pun), particularly when you find out how clean and simple some of his setups are. He lights fast, too.
