Shopping for a new eSATA / SAS card, I am frustrated by the documentation on Highpoint's website. I will not be using the card for RAID, because I've read all the bad reviews of that. If I wanted real RAID, I'd buy an Atto. I'll just be using a combination of Disk Utility software RAID and individual drives, i.e. Red Stations.

Among 4 port eSATA cards, the 2314 costs nearly twice as much as the 644L, but the 644L appears to be better in every way. What gives?

Is there any difference in performance between those two eSATA cards and a 2711 SAS card with fan out cable?

do not buy highpoint. its a nightmare when something goes wrong. trust me.

If you are not using the card for RAID I would highly recommend the ATTO H680... Works like a charm and with two breakout cables you can connect 8 esata devices...
