I've had my RR-X for about 6 months now.
A new Alpha 31.1 Cine-X version has been released along with new Firmware & Driver.
I'm a bit skeptical with the update, I found a combination that worked for me and I'm sticking with it. Dealing with crashing Cine-X is no fun on big shows when time is crucial.
I've considered getting a QUARDO K6000 which I think has 12GB VRAM & 2800 CUDA Cores, this is the card Fincher used for Gone Girl.
I don't think there's a card that can replace the RR-X currently. I'm hoping the K6000 will do the trick, I still don't think its as fast but good enough for now. Will have to spend the $$ to find out.
The 6-Pin power port is poorly placed on the RR-X, so hard to get on or off.
Hopefully the RR-X can transcode 7K-or-8K depending on what the sensor after Dragon will be cause they sure aren't cheap.
Lets just hope in the future it will be faster and can use the SDI out.
It's looking like late 2015 or 2016 we'll see new intel chipsets that will enable ThunderBolt 3.0 which will give you 40Gbs, fast enough to not cripple the RR-X like current enclosures. I refuse to invest in Thunderbolt gear but as we go on it's becoming more and more common. An Old Mac Pro can't work with new ThunderBolt drives high end clients are buying these days. And they're saying Thunderbolt 3.0 will have a re-design so current Thunderbolt cables wont be compatible unless you have adapters. It's unfortunate Thunderbolt can never replace PCIe and yet they keep trying to pick a fight.
To think of the thousands of dollars being wasted every two years when a new Thunderbolt standard comes out is so annoying especially in the recession we are in.
I've heard that the current Mac Pro can't run an iMac 5k Display say if apple where to release a 5K Thunderbolt Display. So crazy man those just came out and are so expensive, just plain wasteful. I guess this is all natural in this mega data revolution.
