  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rocket Not Supporting 2k Over-cranked footage

Great Dan,
Standing by...I would have gladly tested dual SDI straight out, but my SDI monitor is in San Diego and all i have here in Mexico is my Dreamcolor which is fed via the AJA Hi5 converter....so hdsdi out to AJA and converts to HDMI....I'm assuming that there is a plug up somewhere from that bottleneck that causes storm some issue.

Gladly await to test it out.
thanks Dan....

Cool, hopefully it will work for you. The new setting can be accessed via the Red Rocket icon in the Viewer. We still need to add it to the global Prefs though.

thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan, foundry Support:

Still no go for me.....any chance you have had a go at utilizing AJA Hi-5 in your workflow to emulate the problem and hopefully find a solution?

I'm still sitting on the sidelines waiting...desiring/wanting to use Storm in my edit workflow, but can't at the moment. Still using RCX due to this bug.
thanks....

Hi John,

The good news is we have an AJA Hi-5 in house now and believe we have been able to replicate the issue. Dan will be able to follow up with more details as we have them, but it looks like we are making some progress.

Hi John,
I have found a way for the Red Rocket to switch off when enabling the monitor out. It seems that if try to enable the Red Rocket and monitor output at the same time the Rocket card will stay off. I've logged an issue for this (18018).

....First clip ALWAYS plays with rocket acceleration and monitor. Then any clips after that, i loose Rocket acceleration and monitoring. BUT, go back to the original FIRST clip that played with Rocket card and monitor enabled and it works....just no other clips.

It's worth noting that you can only have Monitor Out enabled for one Viewer at a time. Once it is enabled the Rocket card will no longer enabled for the other Viewers.

Can you go to Storm -> Preferences -> RED Rocket Card, enable 'Use RED Rocket card', but leave off 'Enable monitor output'? That way you can switch it on and off for each viewer when needed but the Rocket will be on for playback in each Viewer.

Going through the AJA HI5 I can see that the colourspace is incorrect. We'll need to address that (logged as 18017)

thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
I'm not sure i get what you mean. Are you saying that for EACH clip i need to enable or disable the Rocket Monitor? Or more simply.....how do i utilize my rocket acceleration with rocket monitoring as my default for EACH and every clip? Yes, while rocket monitor is enabled there is also playback on my standard screen within the program Storm. So the Storm monitor is working as well as Rocket Monitor. I want to know HOW to only use my Rocket Monitor.
...this makes sense in that within RedCineX the viewer is DIABLED when you enable Rocket Monitor. So......is that what is being worked on? Basically i don't see how i can utilize Rocket Monitor at this point.

....as for color space being off. Can you elaborate? If you go into the settings of the AJA Hi5 you can choose.....
Thanks Dan,
JOhnny

Just connected my FSI monitor with SDI input...SAME RESULTS as described when using my HP Dreamcolor monitor and AJA Hi-5. Dan, does ANYONE have Storm working with the Rocket MONITOR connected? I've tried and have reached a dead end and frustrated at this point that the Storm program is just sitting in my programs section and i have no use for it until the monitor out portion via rocket card is working.

I'll gladly assist by phone with any details or work i can do my end real time to assist with this predicament. Please let me know how i can help.
Thanks...

Hi Dan,
I'm not sure i get what you mean. Are you saying that for EACH clip i need to enable or disable the Rocket Monitor?

Hi John, only for the Monitor Output. You can have the acceleration on per viewer, but, this will switch off acceleration for all other viewers (temporarily) once the Monitor Output is enabled.

Did you try this:

Storm -> Preferences -> RED Rocket Card, enable 'Use RED Rocket card', but leave off 'Enable monitor output'?

What this will do is leave the acceleration on for for every viewer, then you can manually switch on and off Monitor Output for a given monitor when needed.

Or more simply.....how do i utilize my rocket acceleration with rocket monitoring as my default for EACH and every clip?

Unfortunately, I'm afraid you can't simultaneously. You can only have one concurrent video out stream at any given time.

Yes, while rocket monitor is enabled there is also playback on my standard screen within the program Storm. So the Storm monitor is working as well as Rocket Monitor. I want to know HOW to only use my Rocket Monitor.

Sorry John, there is currently no way to blank the viewer at the same time. I will log this as a request but currently the external monitor stream is synced to the Viewer in Storm. This might be a limitation of the SDK. I'll find out.

Fair point with RedCineX. I'm out of the office this week but I'll check it when I'm back in the office.

Is this a software setting? I'm not too familar with the AJA hardware and I only have the external box.

Just connected my FSI monitor with SDI input...SAME RESULTS as described when using my HP Dreamcolor monitor and AJA Hi-5.

I managed to repro the issue with the acceleration switching off while enabling the monitor out. We can get this resolved. However, the best route at the moment is to just to enable acceleration via the prefs and then switch the monitor out on/off per viewer as needed.

Dan, does ANYONE have Storm working with the Rocket MONITOR connected?

I'm pretty sure they do and we have our setup in the office. I'll contact some people next week directly and see how they are getting on.

I'm really sorry that you are experiencing these problems and we will do our best to resolve them. I'm back in the office on the 3rd of May, can I call you then?

thanks,

Hi Dan,
Yes, please do call me.

As for switching on/off rocket monitoring.....again, not sure how you mean to do this or what you mean by only one stream of video running. BECAUSE, the one stream would then ONLY be what is running on the software portion of storm. MEANING i can NEVER use my rocket monitor OUT. I think this truly must be a mistake. There is no way for me to turn off the software of VIEWER (within storm) so that i can run my ROCKET MONITOR OUT ONLY. I specifically use RCX (and would like to use Storm) for my one light grading before transcoding to prores. So without the rocket monitor out function working i have no way to monitor on a color corrected monitor. I'm certain that the rocket monitor out ability that was put on storm is MEANT to be there.

....Now, if i am missing something and sounds like i am because you have mentioned on two occasions to go into preferences and turn on/off monitoring in order for me to SOLELY use my rocket monitor out. BUT i cannot get that to work and the only item in preferences i see is to turn on/off rocket monitoring.

Thanks

Will do.

By one stream, I only meant for the Monitor Output i.e. excluding the Storm Viewers.

I think this might be where we are at cross purposes. Currently there is no way to switch off the Viewer in Storm (which I will log). When the Monitor Output is enabled, you will the see the image on the external monitor AND the active Storm Viewer.

The preferences recommendation was purely to get around the issue of the RR switching off when enabling both the RR and the Monitor Output at the same time. It's a daft bug, but if you leave the RR enabled for the viewers in Storm, it's then easy to switch on Monitor Output each time you want to use it from a particular Storm Viewer.

thanks,
Dan

Yes, i've always been aware of the fact i can run with acceleration of RR card while viewing on the Storm VIEWER. However, i wish to monitor on Rocket Viewer or EXTERNAL viewer so that i can actually do some color work.

What i've been asking is does this feature currently work ? I've been trying with different monitors and setups trying to make it work. So, if it does not work at this time, then please let me know and i can stop trying to figure out what is wrong with my setup. My use of Storm requires ability to monitor on a color corrected monitor so that i can color correct my footage. So without the Rocket Monitoring and Rocket Acceleration working i cannot use it and am back with RCX.

So, question is....does it work concurrently? Rocket monitoring and acceleration? If not, then please do advise when that will be fixed.
thanks

Hi John, it was great to catch up with you earlier. Good luck with the upcoming shoot. :smile5:

Dan, James et al......
Thanks for the conversation this morning. I can announce that i now have rocket monitor out via HDSDI out working on Storm thanks to the help from guys at Storm.

.....So, if anyone else can learn from this.....this is what you need to know:
When utilizing Redrocket AND Rocket Moniotring out via HD-SDI....this is how to avoid the issue that i had. My issue was this:
*i'd pull in a folder of R3d clips, then double click them to get them into the player one at a time....at the top of my viewer i would see EACH Clip that i double clicked....this means i have MULTIPLE viewers AND storm cannot run the Rocket out with MULTIPLE viewers.....That is the workflow i had just been used to for past few yeas with RCX.

NOW....in order to only have ONE viewer open and for ROCKET acceleration AND Monitoring to work properly. One has to grab either one clip or MULTIPLE clips and DRAG them to the viewer. Then you can play each clip and Storm recognizes this as only ONE viewer being open and you can view clips On BOTH the Storm Viewer AND the Rocket Monitor.

My understanding of multiple viewers was basically wrong....I thought one viewer open was ONE viewer, but if you continue to double click on clips...you'll see the tabs at the top of the viewer---and those are associated with there OWN VIEWER...so in essence you then have multiple viewers open taking from your system resources and not allowing you to view via your Rocket Monitor.

....this is a HUGE help now that I understand this and NOW i can use Storm and my rocket monitorign...and see Storms Scopes in real time. As discusses this morning, it may be nice to have the option to TURN OFF the storm viewer in order to speed up the rocket monitoring since having that one viewer open takes from the computers system resources and you see a very slight lag in footage playback from the monitor and Storm viewer.

Thanks John,

It was great to speak with you. We love to get user feedback and are pleased that you are able to progress with STORM.

We are looking at ways to improve the viewer options so that you can easily control whether or not clicking on a clip will open your media in the existing or a new viewer.

We have also logged the request to provide the ability to turn off the STORM viewer during monitor out.

Thanks again,
Paul
