  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rocket Not Supporting 2k Over-cranked footage

Here is what i am having difficulty with at moment. Open Storm 1.0v1; drop in my footage which is mixed 4k 16:9 and 2k 16:9 overcranked at 90 & 96 fps footage. I enable my rocket card and monitor out. I run dual HDSDI out to AJA hi5 converter, then HDMI to my Dreamcolor monitor.

When i click on rocket monitor within storm is set it as 1920x1080p 29.97 for my initial setup; click ok.

I have no problems reviewing my 4k footage with rocket acceleration and monitor enabled. Works FLAWLESSLY.

However, when i click on a 2k overcranked clip, the rocket emblem turns "OFF" and no acceleration or picture on my Rocket Monitor out is available.

Basically everytime i go to a 2k overcranked clip, the rocket card no longer is enabled. I was thinking that there must be a setup for 2k footage, but could not find anything obvious. Can anyone assist with this or is this in fact a bug. I'm running all latest firmware and rocket firmware.

Hi Dan....any of my 100+ clips in 2k overcranked don't play back. Glad to send you a quick sample....where to?
how about your FTP or MINE??
 
So i went back and verified my drivers...all ok, but went ahead and re-installed them along with firmware.

Here are some initial problems:
a. Launch Storm; drag and drop a reel on Storm....crashes, send report to Foundry; re-launch--always relaunches with no problems.
b. Rocket card now is working SPORADICALLY. just opened an entire reel of 2k footage and clicked on first 2k clip and rocket was in fact enabled. went to next clip....rocket now "white" (not enabled). Now back to 4k footage--no rocket enabled.

So....i seem to be having erratic problems with this.
NOW, i do have a HUGE batch reder going on in the background with FCP.....not sure IF or HOW that can cause a problem, but in 2 hours when it's done I'll know.
Anything Dan?

Is the footage 2k 16:9 or 2k 2:1?

2k 2:1 is 2048 x 1024 and the 1024 is actually smaller than 1080 so the footage has to be scaled up and the Rocket does not support scaling up.

Lots of people have run into this with the Rocket in RCX. But it normally shows as the render takes super long for 2k 2:1 compared to super fast for 4k because the rocket is not being used and not the Rocket being disabled. I haven't tested with Storm, so this could be a different problem.

So....finished my HUGE FCP batch export. Went back to Storm, loaded a reel.
First clip played fine with red rocket card and monitor out enabled...was a 4k 16:9 @ 29.97 clip....then went to next clip @ 2k 16:9 @ 29.97 overcranked at 90fps....would not play through Rocket card...went back to first clip which was 4k 16:9 @29.97...and then that would not engage rocket card...chose a few more clips and then Storm crashed.....

Opened back up and chose an entirely DIFFERENT reel and SAME-SIMILAR results.

Not yet, the only 1.4.* drivers/firmware that we have tested so far have been for Epic which Storm doesn't upport just yet. I'd say hold fire for the moment as Storm 1.0v1 is qualified with 1.3.5c. :smile5:

After spending several hours testing different footage....the problem i am experiencing is NOT related to having mixed 4k and 2k overcranked footage on the SAME reel.

The problem i have found is when i ENABLE my rocket MONITOR or DON'T. I can call up and run any clip i want with my rocket card enabled as long as my rocket MONITOR is NOT enabled. As soon as i enable my rocket Monitor, clips crash....or rather only one (the first) clip plays, then any others after that do not play....the rocket card goes down.

My setup is:
Rocket Card with dual HDSDI out to AJA hi5 and then HDMI out to Dreamcolor monitor.

I can monitor and run transcode or watch clips with my rocket card enabled, but just cannot use my monitor out....so for now i have to go back to RCX to transcode, one light and work with my clips. REALLY want to use Storm when this bug is smashed.

any new information on the rocket monitor out situation described? I cannot use at all Storm with my rocket monitor attached at moment. So using RCX 356 and awaiting with fangs drooling to use Storm, but of no use to me now without my monitor out attached.

So after quadruple checking footage on Storm with my redrocket enabled and rocket monitoring....I have definitely come to the conclusion that this is a problem related to ONLY when i enable Rocket Monitoring on Storm. Everything works great if only using the Rocket acceleration, however when i enable the monitor, then that is when i loose the rocket acceleration.

....First clip ALWAYS plays with rocket acceleration and monitor. Then any clips after that, i loose Rocket acceleration and monitoring. BUT, go back to the original FIRST clip that played with Rocket card and monitor enabled and it works....just no other clips.

Dan, can you regenerate that same problem? and more importantly a fix anytime soon? Glad to be available for phone call or more....
 
Maybe a wild guess, but any info can help (i don't have a rocket).
But did you have FCP still running? I have problems with other programs displaying through decklink or aja kona if I have FCP still running, or it gives strange problems with playing. Like you describe. So if you try running storm alone.

Same results with FCP DISABLED or ENABLED.
 
I'm assuming by lack of responses there are not so many folks running Storm then. Im ready to assist anytime Dan....Foundry. Please use me to fix this hiccup....please. Want to begin using Storm. For now it sits in my apps folder.

Hi Johnny, we have tried loading both clips into RedCineX and Storm but they crash on import. It looks like the clips might have got corrupted on uploading. Can you re-upload?

Hi Johnny, in the next build (1.0v2) there'll be a new setting in the Output Monitor settings. This will enable you to switch between DVI/HDMI or SDI. We had an issue at the Storm Launch Event where we had issues going through a breakout box to do 4k monitor out with DVI/HDMI. I don't have a way to test here, but we should be able to get you a build to test.
