  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RIP Canon C500

I think the C500 is actually an extremely capable camera but failed commercial because it was limited by the codex recorder when it launched and support from Convergent Design didn't show up until much later. Remember Shane Hulburt's tests paint the C500 in a very positive light - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TtELVauUS4

I also still regularly shoot C500 next to Red Weapon MG and they cut together seamlessly.

More than anything Canon has a PR problem. I agree that they aren't listening to pros but it seem a bit preemptive of us to pass judgment on the C700 before anyone has shot on it. I do think the Codex recorder and the high price tag associated with it could be problematic.

Canon has made hell lot of profits from the sale of C100 and C300 cameras. So when one model ie C500 fails to take off, the company won't fold down.

Canon tries to do market segmentation. Four years ago when I was talking with their India head, he was telling me that they created C100 for people who are just stepping up from the DSLRs. They didn't imagine that the C100 will be used in all kinds of video shoots and become very popular. Only after the found about its popularity, they created a version II for the C100 and gave the much needed tweaks to make it usable including a 60p at full HD. At that time they had estimated that majority of the market is 1080, so the C300 was in 1080. Just to have one leg in the high resolution camera game, they had launched C500.

Now that 4K is more mainstream than it was, they have made the C300 II 4k. They brought in C700 aimed at the cinema guys and high end broadcast. Unfortunately, the codex recorder cost will ensure that many smaller companies like mine can't afford it (yet). In one way Canon is right by stopping the Convergent Design's Odyssey from accessing its raw because they gave a step-motherly treatment to C500 and instead allocated all resources for enabling raw to Sony FS700. However, as a customer I won't be too happy that a lower cost alternative to codex is not available. For the Cinema guys this camera will be a rental item and they won't care about the cost of codex.

The C700 is not yet in the market. So we should wait to see how its adoption takes place. One thing we can be sure is that it would work straight out of the box without any problems as they release mature products albeit late.
