  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Riding the Storm! (First Impressions)

I know Wave support has been mentioned in a previous thread, but I'm also adding a vote for Wave support as soon as possible. I bought my Wave because it was supported by Color and Redcine-X before the release and support of the MC Color. I know I'm not the only one who purchased the Wave based on early RED support.

That is what I tough as well, and yes you are definitely not the only one wishing for wave support on Storm ;)

Very nice and informative write-up Paul, much appreciated!

Great review Paul, thank you.

Sooooooo badly looking forward to November - damn I hate wishing away the year!

Looking forward to your updates Paul - thread subscribed :)

All the best,

Just want to add to the thanks, Paul, I shall be following your posts like a hawk

Cheers

Mike

STORM tag notes

STORM tag notes

Hi Meryem,
In fact we already have "notes" which are just tags with a freeform text field. You add it to the clip, frame or timeline and a text box pops up for you to type into.
Hope that hits the spot.
Sorry, no, it's Oct 9th over here...

LOL! As an easterner, I've always wondered a little about a "cowboy". I always figured it as a shot that was wide enough to show head to saddle when he was sitting on a horse. Glad to have that cleared up.

Here in Germany we call it "Amerikanische" (American) and relate it to the gun in the holster too. I think the French term is the same.

Hi Paul,
Chief STORM maker Juan just told me that they slipped ATI support into Alpha3 - we just didn't know.
STORM dev team rocks!

Nice one Juan!

I'm looking forward to testing Friday's Alpha on my Mac Pro with Rocket and ATI card on Monday. Previous Alpha gave better performance on my MacBook Pro with it's Nvidia card than the Mac Pro with the Rocket.

And good write up Paul.

Thanks Nick,
Haven't spoken to you for a while so congrats on your involvement in Storm. Hope you're doing well. You won't be disappointed with the ATI card performance one bit.

Also voting for Wave support in Storm !
Looking forward to the release of Storm, we love Nuke and sure will love Storm :)

This is a very nice feature, Chris, is there any chance these notes can be compiled from pure data into a single document, which stays mobile with a mag?

on the editor side of things, it's nice to be able to pull up a set of director's notes before I even dig into the contents of the clip files...if these can be portable with a mag, from production to post, all the better. a lot cleaner than scribbled notes on a script or camera logs, to have it right there, accessible on the screen, with its collection of clips...it's just a bit of Clipfinder functionality which I miss in RedCineX - can't hurt to ask the heroes at the Foundry, to see if they can add it.

just askin'.

RMD was designed with this in mind so we can propogate from epic/scarlet.

How ironic, that if I wanted to implement use of both Storm and Resolve, I would have to make couple of hard choices.

Storm
1. Euphonics
2. Need to use SDI output from RR for graded output

Resolve
1. Wave
2. Need to use SDI output from Decklink for graded output.

Both companies saying, that another panel support is coming, but I wouldn't hold my breath for the near future. Meanwhile, do I need to buy both panels?

I'll wager a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon (hey, I'm watching football, it's my football beverage, awright?) that The Foundry gets there before BlackMagic. Any takers?

Looking right now on what to do as far as my MAC PRO solution, one or two stations, but definitely one station with the Mac Pro will be configured for S3D, with multiple Panels and dual RR, which will all go in to Big Foot carts built with Maxx Digital.

So really need to get in to specifics to figure this one out.

If you can afford it buy two or three systems. As you know there is a lot of post demand in a country like Italy. You will probably find lots of talented young folk who would want to work with you. it would be good to have a full edit and color station, a full audio station and a 3d station.

As a startupp i'll advise you to skip the resolve panel and use the money to buy a smoke on Mac finishing system to go with your Adobe, Davinci, storm and Red. Lots of creative tools in your Arsenal. make sure you get the red rocket card

Hello all, I have been running the latest alpha version of Storm for about two weeks so far along side our existing workflow. The tremendous power and flexibility of this tool is right on par with the other Foundry tools I have come to know and love. While it is still in dev, the usefulness of this application, and how it will fit into our existing pipeline is already clear. Kudos to The Foundry, looks like another great product.

Does Storm handle media offloading from CF card to hard drive?

Currently Storm will see the local mounted media but it does not automate media offload or do concurrent media copy.
The Foundry is aware of this request but it is not currently implemented.

On the issue of tags and RMD metadata following from Meryem's earlier posts;

I have been recently trying out the tagging in RedcineX to put metadata into the RMD's as per REDCineX's system - Scene, Shot Take, Comments, lens, continuity notes, circled etc.

Does Storm currently support these and is there a way of sending them out with timelines or transcodes into FCP so that you can browse, search and order clips based on these fields within FCP?

Also one further feature request - output support for video cards such as Blackmagic, AJA and Matrox make (I have the MXO2 with MAXX for fast H264 encodes). This may be too specialised for The Foundry to implement themselves but if the API, hooks, and documentation are there and the vendors suitably encouraged they may eventually add support in their drivers I hope.
