Hi All,

I'm looking for a way to mount a Red spinner on a Weapon. On the Epic, the left ribs worked very nicely. But on Weapon, we can't seem to find an elegant solution. The DSMC Top Mount (adjustable) would probably work okay, but it would make the camera a bit tall (and it's quite expensive). We have the Woodencamera top plate but the pogo connecter gets in the way if we mount a SWAT rail horizontally on the left side. I did see woodencamera tease some ribs during NAB, but those would not work for us either as they connect to the riser plate (which we don't use). Has anyone else released or announced NATO ribs for Weapon?

Thanks,
Rob

Have you tried attaching the DSMC NATO ribs to your weapon?
I'd be surprised if it worked since the bodies are different fimensions.
I'd try it myself and let you know but I can't test it since I don't have them.
One Option would be to attach it to your top handle, depening on what top handle you use.
Check the 6th pic under this link, this might give you some ideas.

Or you could find something like this in small to attach it ontop of your top plate and then attach the nato rail on its side.
That way you should be clear to attach the spinner without getting the pogo-pin adapter in your way

Both are not the best solutions though I guess.
Let me know if you figured out a way and how you did it. Would like to see pics of your solution.

Hi Simeon,

Thanks for the help!

Old ribs definitely will not work. There are no 1/4-20 holes near the base of the Weapon. There is an attachment point, but afaik nothing has been announced that attaches to it.

I hadn't thought of using an accessory attachment bracket off the side of the sliding top handle. Will give that a try as soon as our Weapon comes back in.

A small spacer similar to the pic you posted would also work. It could be attached to the left side of the top plate to move the NATO rail a bit further from the camera. It would only need to be about 5mm thick to ensure the spinner clears the pogo connector. Any idea where to search for such a thing?

I would still far prefer a vertical rib, so the spinner can be moved quite far down. I guess I'll have to wait for someone to make one.

Side note: I'm wondering if Red has moved away from NATO accessories altogether with the DSMC2 system?

Offhollywood was showing ribs with their new top and base plate(s) at NAB.

Thanks Stacey, I hadn't seen those. Unfortunately they don't look like they are NATO rail compatible (though I suppose one could always bolt a rail to the rib). Also, they connect to a riser. I need something that connects directly to the camera (left side, near the base) and top plate.

I don't think RED completely parts with NATO rails, they just haven't announced any top plates, riser, ribs, etc yet.
They always point out RED makes obsolescence obsolete. WHich means you will be able to use most of your DSMC accessories.
But I recon it will take another few months until they actually announc and resell those, regarding what's happening right now with all the camera orders.

I would check amazon or smaller companies like: gini rigs, smallrigs ikan, tilta, etc
They might have somehting. Hiere is what I found just now without any deeper research:

Also this might be your solution:
It looks like it is a slightly higher NATO rail (unfrtunately not a good description but you could get in touch with them so the send you pics):

Hope oe of those hints will lead you to findign what you need :)

Thanks Simeon, I think the Smallrig Cheese Bar that you suggested will be the best solution for now.

Happy to help! Once you rigged up your camera could you send me some pics? or post them here?
I'd liek to see how you solved this issue?!

Have you looked at Wooden Camera's Safety NATO Arm? One draw back is that you will need to buy WC's Easy Top Plate and Easy Riser.

What I like about the Easy Top Plate is that fact that you have 2 LEMO ports - so you have the use of the DSMC monitors. There are also many 1/4 and 3/8 mounting holes for various accessories

The lemo adapters have 1/4-20 holes so I added the lemo adapter to the evf port and then attached a nato rail and then a spinner to the rail. Had to use a long rail to get the monitor/evf where I wanted it but works okay with both.

Will do. Our camera is on a rental for the next few weeks, but I'll order the bits meanwhile and post back here when I have a solution.

I already have the Easy Top plate, but I'd rather not use the riser since I'm using a Red quick release bridge plate. A NATO rib that runs from the Easy Top and attaches near the bottom of the Weapon would be ideal.

Thanks Matt, I did try this before we got the Woodencamera Easy Top. Seemed to work okay, although I did worry a bit about putting strain on the pogo connector if the EVF got bumped.

Hi Simeon, just letting you know the Smallrig cheese bar makes a perfect spacer and kinda solves my issue - I'd still prefer a rib so the spinner can be mounted lower and adjusted vertically, but this will suffice until something better is released.
