Review: Excellent ProRes Option for Epic/Scarlet, Hyper Decklink Shuttle 2

Hello Timur,

Thanks for the review.
Quick question: is the HDMI loop through?

Thanks

Pat
Yes, it will loop hdmi, sdi, and cross convert between them.

Peter,

How did the MB film go? Hopefully I'll get to work on a future one.

This this is not only loop through, but it also does conversion HDMI / SDI in both ways!!!
It also records with the TC run or Rec trigger (no need to press the button on the deck, only on the camera)
It is light, simple to use and cheap, oh and it does ProRes HQ now!

[Edit] sorry for the double answer.

Timur,
Please don't forget to call me when you down with Rokinon test.

Timur, a quick note:
as far as using the Hdeck Shuttle with "DSLR's with clean HDMI out": it can not remove the 2:3 pulldown to convert the video back into 24P…. And doing so in post is not a joy. Not when the Ninja 2 does it all.

I would have bought one by now if it carried the file names through sdi or hdmi? Have you found a solution for linking back to the red media?

Cheers

S

One important detail about recording this way is ... you skip RED's compression entirely (having to compress 4K HD at 6:1 if you're a Scarlet owner) and can actually get more detail (assuming your final output is 1080p), especially in low light, by going directly to ProRes - or even more with un-compressed (which certainly isn't an option with recording to a RED SSD.

It's recording a debayered (but uncompressed) pristine 1080p feed from the RED (no compression artifacts or lost details) - and then either compressing to ProRes to simply recording un-compressed.

Would be nice if the TV shows adopted this method, as I really get sick of reading about yet another show using ARRI due to the simplicity of ProRes.

Hi Timur,

All went well, you may have seen us going up and down the east river with Mailer's house on the barge. The hurricane did shut us down for a couple of weeks, had to stash the house up the New Town creek. Studio went 6 feet under.

Ugh thats awful..... There must have been so much lost to the water.

At least the house was safe. CAnt wait to see the finished product.

Yes but timecode will be the same from day to day. Unless you only do one day shooting, different clip will have the same tc.

I am not using it for multi day shoots, its to get me in and out of quick single day interviews, mini doc stuff that comes up all the time.

A real shoot is getting a DIT and a transcode station.

Thanks for the review/ Nice to know that BMD supports TC on some of it's products. I bought the UltraStudio for doing interview work but TC is not supported.

Maybe I'm missing something, mine isn't working. I'm getting no image? Do you have to enable SDI first? If you output from RED SDI into recorder (mini SDI - shuttle2) then output through HDMI to monitor, would that work?

Do you need the REDMag SSD to be used too or can it be eliminated?

Has anyone linked back the prores to the original Reds via timecode? In DaVinci? The roughly $2k price difference between this and the Pix240 is almost justified by that one feature alone (the one that passes the naming structure through the SDI connection), depending on the application . . .

You can eliminate the RedMag SSD when using the Pix240, and tell the camera just to send out the Rec Start/Stop signal through SDI. Don't see why you couldn't do the same with the BlackMagic device, since all of that is done camera-side. It's a fairly new feature (was added this summer).
