Retail Scarlet

Since when does a fixed lens establish something as "prosumer"? And when does an interchangeable lens mark something as "professional"?

Scarlet is a Pocket Professional Digital Cinema camera. Putting it in Best Buy or Frys would make no sense. Doing so would be a mistake. This is a product aimed at professionals, not soccer moms. If it's going to be sold by resellers, it'll be sold by professional resellers.

The Apple store? I hope not. That's a place that was designed to sell iPods and other Apple products, and has nothing to offer a digital cinema professional. I'd much rather walk in to Abel or Band Pro or EVS or Lerro or Roscor or CineEquipt to buy a Scarlet, than try to deal with some end-consumer/retail clerk. A professional cine equipment reseller is going to have every accessory, every mattebox and filter, every bag and mixer and cable and everything else you're going to want. The Apple Store isn't going to have anything like that, and neither's Best Buy.

Let's put it this way: who'd you rather buy a Scarlet from, who'd you rather consult with as you're making the decision: Mitch Gross, or a 16-year-old Apple Store clerk? More importantly, who do you think Jim would rather have representing his product and Red's brand: a veteran cinematographer and equipment master like Mitch, or some kid at Best Buy?

Ain't gonna happen. I predict we won't be seeing Scarlet at Best Buy or the Apple store. Maybe we'll see RedRay there, but not Scarlet.

You can talk to anybody it pleases you...remember people like choices.

I expect Scarlet to be functional out of the box just like every other sub $3k camera. The average purchaser will probably also get a few filters, an extra battery, a charger, a case, a tripod, and some CF cards... exactly which depends on what's in the box itself. This is exactly the purchasing setup a lot of non-pro resellers use.

Furthermore, where the heck do soccer moms pick up their shooting gear? While I'd be happy doing web purchases and blow loads of my free time reading spec sheets and reviews to procrastinate spending my hard-earned cash, I suspect the majority of 'soccer mom' purchases are based on the best product in the store.

Frankly, I don't care where I purchase a Scarlet - in fact, I suspect your local Best Buy clerk needs the cash a lot more than Jannard & Co. Moreover, I don't want service. I want the damn thing to work like it's supposed to. And if it doesn't, I'm usually happy to write it off, open it up, and see what the heck is inside.

A lot of people seem to think Scarlet won't be sold to the masses because they want it to be an elite product for professionals. It seems to me that Scarlet will be as good as you treat it, but its target price is such that you don't need to be professional to afford it.

I hope we don't have to go through any:

Well the Scarleet is $3000
but...

the charger is $500
The Batteries are $200 each

etc.

PLEASE INCLUDE EVERYTHING WE NEED TO START SHOOTING IN THE BOX

that is...a charger, a battery and if you're feeling generous a CF card (or 2 if you're feeling really generous)

I would be HIGHLY surprised if that wasn't the case.

do you mean, you'd be highly surprised if the charger and battery did come with the Package, or you'd be highly surprised if the charger and battery did not come with the package?

If a soccer mom wants to buy one, Red will sell it to her. But while it may be affordable, most people won't have a compelling reason to buy one. If it were $1,000 and could also do SD and HDV or AVCHD, didn't have an involved workflow, and were reasonably well advertised, average people might buy it. Not everyone knows or cares about this stuff as much as folks in this forum. Red One was announced two years ago and has been out about half a year. Ask your non-video/film friends what Red One is; probably less than one in ten has any idea. Unless Red advertises Scarlet and sells it through nonprofessional dealers, not many people will learn about or buy it. And even when they do learn about it, unless they have a lot of discretionary income, they will probably do at least a rough cost-benefit analysis. With a $500-$1,000 camcorder as the norm, most will need a compelling reason (for them, not for people on this forum) to buy one at $3,000. But that's probably true of most purchases for most people: the more something costs, the more thought, research, and comparison shopping go into it.

It's a fixed lens, which makes it prosumer, and sometimes places like Best Buy, and especially Frys, will carry prosumer cameras in the $3k-$5k range.

I would bet that Jim wouldn't want to get in bed with the likes of "you don't buy, you rent from" Fry's.

Besides, the interviews I've seen with Ted this year suggests Barry is more on point if Red went retail.

But who am I to argue with you, Shawn. You'll have two Reds before I'll have one. ;)

And BARRY: "neither's?" Is that North Carolina rubbing off on you? ;)

Besides of Mac Pros, Macbook Pros, Cinema Displays and tons of great SW (which is BTW preferred by RED) and accessories. All the Apple Stores I have been to had few guys who knew what they were talking about - just ask for them...

I am sorry I wasn't clear.

I would be surprised if the accessories were included...as they have indicated, you buy the accessories you use for the red one.

Although I don't know, does the Red One come with batteries?

Both Jim and Ted clearly mentioned that Scarlet is going to be ready to shoot out of the box. So it will have all basic accessories needed to use it included. Rest assured...

Plus the battery/charger prices mentioned above are for the RED-BRICK solution - which is not the same system used by Scarlet. Scarlet has "her" own small battery/charger. I do hope thou that Scarlet could draw power externally from the RED-BRICK...

I guess it won’t be too big of a battery. The HVX 200 battery is pretty small and packs good power.

The Apple store? I hope not.
I like Apple, but I hate going in the Apple store. It is a mad house in there. It is jam packed in there with teenagers. When Apple first opened their stores, all the employees were geniuses. Now they are all idiots. But I must say, they look cool and hip, even if they don't know much.
Red doesn't need to sell Scarlet at the Apple stores. But the Apple stores should have some Scarlets hooked up to their laptops so that you and I can go there and see how they link up. Since one CF card will hold only a few minutes of video, I will probably get a Mac laptop to off load my memory to. I remember when the Apple stores had Canon GL2s set up and I could see how they worked with the Mac. That was nice. But I didn't order my GL2 from Apple. I ordered it from B&H. Only problem is B&H closes for every Jewish holiday :( I need Passover to be over so I can order some stuff.

If Scarlet were to go retail, it would likely be through channels like B&H. Best Buy would not put Scarlet in their stores even if it came from the almighty womb of Sony because it doesn't fit in with the products being displayed and there is a certain price limit (which Scarlet exceeds quite a bit if the final price is above $1300) that retailers like Circuit City and Best Buy allow for every category of product they put in their stores to prevent losses for various reasons ranging from theft to careless handling of merchandise.

Bah, prosumer... Just a catagory. Fact is, I believe in Red's products and their mission, you could call it "crap in a bag" and I would still buy it. You could sell it at radio shack and I'd still buy it, hell stick it in a box of cracker jacks, and you would see me in Costco buying cracker jacks in bulk. The fact that some of you are apposed to buying this in a store is boggling, if Red sold this to major retailers doesn't change their product or what they are here to do. Sounds like a bunch of elitist jive to me.

Cheers,
