ReSale Prices

Their desire for my (or anyone's) camera can be quantified with great accuracy - down to the dollar. And when they offer $3000 for a $6000 item I have no leverage because they never intend to come close to the asking price - they're not genuinely interested in purchasing. That's the point - when you offer half of an already decent asking price you're proving from your first communication that you DON'T want the item, not that you do.

That at is one way of looking at it I suppose... Glass half empty and all.

You could also focus on the positive. If they didn't want your camera why would they press on, whine and brow beat you? Why make the effort? It sounds a lot like begging to me. No, I say the harder they press the issue, the more they want it. You take it how you like.

I will also say however that you can not hope to gain any leverage if you can't see how badly they want it, and they do want it. Otherwise they never would have contacted you in the first place. Most low ballers view the act as a worth while long shot. They have nothing to loose in making the offer but everything to gain if you take it. They only loose their dignity if they press too hard. People trade dignity for sales every day. ;-)

You are probably right about their ability to pay what it is worth though and are right not to waste your time on them.

just a thought or two.

Cheers!

See the value when they drop that 8K and new chip, I think everyone will be in the same bucket. Quick sellers will be on top because they have the cash flow to make up the difference. The slower you sell the less you will get.

I think part of the problem with these really quick (compared to other companies) updates that Red is doing is that it’s making it harder for new customers to get in because of the long wait for upgrades to finish (which is great for existing customers who get the camera first, and deservedly so).

At the start of the year, I was seriously considering a Dragon, then quickly there was mentions of Weapon and of course you are going to take a wait a see approach. So now I’m in limbo as I want to purchase a high end camera (I would buy Magnesium Weapon today if I could), but buying a new Dragon now and then upgrading to Weapon would be really, really expensive at this point.

Many of the used Dragon kits are a decent deal, but sellers want to bundle in all components, many of which won’t be Weapon transferable so you’d be stuck with all these useless parts that you paid for. Take into account the transfer fees and the huge amount of time and risk involved in wiring a stranger a massive sum of money with nothing but a handshake is very risky.

I think it would be a little easier to sell just a used Brain with maybe the media and side handle since you won’t lose much going to Weapon, but I understand how most people want to get rid of everything that they over bought at the start.

So now I’m stuck waiting for a Mag Weapon. I’m seriously considering the Alexa Mini because the image is amazing and it will probably be available sooner than Magnesium, but I like the ability to upgrade with Red and Mag Weapon is still considerably cheaper than an Alexa Mini.

So yeah, for most new customers to get into the Red game (who can only afford the Mag version), it’s a long wait till 2016. Sigh…..

That is true. My advise is don't do it. Why would you engage in a $10k or $15k deal and not invest in an airline ticket as insurance? It doesn't make much sense.

No matter what, do not buy a new RED product. Basically, it loses 60%-70% of it's value the minute after you do so. The latest offer I got on my Scarlet was $3000. Thats 30% of new.

Don't ever buy a new car either....that would be stupid...you know how they lose value right off the lot....

I usually don't get involved in this stuff, but that statement just doesn't make any sense. So you're saying the going rate on an Epic Dragon after you buy it new from Red is $8,400 if I wanted to turn around and sell it? Sorry, I don't mind people saying that the price drops... that's not really much of a shocker... But to exaggerate it like that is just absurd. If the Epic Dragon is 24K new... and I buy it... just because I bought it, it loses (we'll go halfway between the 60%-70% that is being suggested.) making the resale value of my camera $8,400? I've never seen one at that price. Please send me a link if you find one going for that. In addition, you cant call a "Scarlet-X" a new product, even if you're buying it new. The price is what it is from RED. Your example of your Scarlet is not apples to apples. You're talking about a technology that is a few years old now and a generation behind. You cant expect to buy a leftover 2012 car that has zero miles on it for the list price in 2015 and then expect to get the same resale of that car as a 2015. Again... these numbers, and I've seen them a couple of times in the thread, are exaggerated.
