ATI 2600 Graphic card took a dive (second time on this machine)...

What do you guys recommend as a replacement these days? I'm running a late '08 Mac Pro tower.

I need to run the usual Red software and use FCS2.

Thanks.

Stephen thanks for the heads up.

From Jeff's reviews/experiences, I'm thinking I should stick with an older card for my '08 tower. Maybe the 8800GT? Or just get another ATI 2600?

If anyone has an opinion on the above, please chime in.

ATI 2600 isn't a very good card. For a low cost option, I would recommend the 8800GT. It's a solid performer and may simplify your life if you plan to install the RED ROCKET; as it only occupies a single-card width, leaving the option slot open and leaves the second 12V aux power connector open as well.

Other than that, I would recommend the ATI 4870, possibly the GTX 285. The GTX is the superior card, but current drivers are holding it back, especially on the '08 Mac Pro for some reason. However, I think it's only a driver update or two away from becoming the top Mac video card (for now).

Aussie colorist David Gross recommended the 8800GT to us (we also have late 08 Mac Pro). Works fine for us.
