Hi all,

I am in the process of determining a prime lens kit to buy with the intent to rent them to fellow filmmakers at a discounted price in the NYC area. It's either going to be Zeiss CP2's, Cooke mini S4's, Cooke S4, or Ultra Primes. I am going to be renting them out starting december 1st, 2013 close to manhattan.

Before I buy I wanted to get a feel for the market and try to get in touch with people who would like to use them.

NYC filmmakers: which lenses to you most often use and at what price point would you be willing to buy if you were going through me rather than a rental house?

Any info you could provide would be a huge help.

Thanks,
kevin

Of the lenses you mentioned, Cooke s4s or Ultraprimes...the CP2 everyone has and while the Mini s4s are great, personally I'd take the s4s over them.

Rental house prices for those lenses go for about $150 per lens, 3-day week (monday to monday). That's "list price", rental houses will throw on a discount on top to compete with other companies...Adorama in particular.

If you really want a hot lens kit, get the Lecia's and rent those at $150 a piece, you'll be NYC's go-to guy...but there's quite a wait for those.

Been a rental manager for 2-years, thought I'd throw my two cents in.

My Red Pro Primes have been picking up rental momentum. RPPs are not an easy sell, but I bought them because (after a looong long research process) I decided that they were the lenses I want to shoot on. Recently I convinced someone to rent my RPPs over CP.2s and they were very impressed by the quality. Now clients are coming back to me for the RPPs (plus my Scarlet and convenient hand delivery). Also, if you want a softer look, (either get some Zeiss Superspeeds or) throw a black pro mist 1/8 or 1/4 over the RPPs. Beauty.

hey everyone. Thanks for teh input. What do you guys think about renting on consignment? and your opinions of rehoused cooke panchros

Fujinon Cabrio 19-90.
Not going to buy one, but that is a go to lens for a lot of productions today.
Docu, fiction with serious time constraints, ENG, etc.

You will make your money back.

Otherwise, Ultraprimes are the most profitable rental lenses, but a bit dull if you ask me.
