Just something I picked up on subliminal frequencies when hovering through the Scarlet-Forum:
I keep reading the Word "Rental" all the time. Like "No Dude, i wouldn't pick this Setup, cause nobody would wanna rent it like that" or "Take this item ... then it will be more attractive to rent out" - Do i miss something here?
Thought we buy cameras to shoot stuff ourselves ;-) Or is renting really sooo finacially attractive?
Never thought about it because people tend to break stuff they rent. And even if ya have insurance set up ... you still have to wait a long time until the cam is fixed or a new Cam ships. So why bother the hustle?

When I think of rentals, Its when a Production Company/Producer calls me and wants to "rent my camera and I" out or "hire me" Its sort of a similar thing in SOME cases. In other cases I would agree with your post. People seem to look at it as a rental item to make money on, but there is nothing wrong with that.

absolutely nothing wrong with that ... i just didn't realize that this is such a big topic ... and it kept popping up all the time so i thought about it again. Maybe I just need someone to say: "I've rented out my RED-Baby 100 times, made a lot of good money with it and it returned safely and in one piece every time" and i just might give it a try as well ... ;-)

That's why I have no intent to rent to anyone who isn't a long time friend or colleague.

I'm not a rental house and it's just not worth the hassle. :)

I will only be renting to people at the same school and I will definitely be going along with the camera. Other than that, i'm going to be shooting my ass off...

Same for me, Ill rent the camera out but i travel with the camera on any set its on and will be cam op for the shoot. hopefully thats attractive to somebody. haha.

I've paid for all of my equipment through renting it, with or without me (but I send gaffers and assistants I trust with it...)

(And yes, "looks" do count when clients pay good money, they want to see where the money goes)

Thought about it, for like half a minute, and decided renting out is like giving my arm away. I would rather rent out my services with the camera and even then, if I had the time to spare.

I'm buying the camera so that I can have it to use it. I'm funding it by selectively renting, and preferably being paid to shoot on it.

If I could afford to just buy it and shoot only my own stuff, I would in a heartbeat.

But, you know, work smarter, not harder, and all that.

I am have waiting to buy a red for personal use.. Been renting for a while now but now I will own. I will have a package rate that goes with me on gigs.

I _ONLY_ rent my cameras.... and too sweeten the deal I always include a DP (moi) and field package in the price. Its worked the last 25 yrs...

I think the more appropriate question isn't "how much can I rent the camera out for?" but... "How much can I bill a client for that day of shooting with my new Scarlet?"

Thats the way I look it it...
