Our EPIC-X #2091 was rented out last week to some guys from Aberdeen. (there were a few other bits as well O-BOX, Red Zoom 18-50mm, 64GBSS, Arri MFF1 and cases)

Everything checked out, paid money up front, took out insurance, plenty of ID.

I get a phone call/email on the return day saying they'd took the camera to Iran and the police had seized it while they were legitimately making a film. (This is besides the fact they broke the T&C by taking it out of Europe). They said they would be at least a day late!

I've not been able to successfully contact them since the phone call/email. Police are informed as are the insurers - but it's technically a civil issue at the moment as the equipment could be just late - but I doubt it now.

Although it's early days and I'm not saying it's been stolen yet, it's a situation to be aware of.

My company is BESQ LTD and our kit has stickers on.

Sorry to hear that Tyrone, very difficult to give advice on something like that.

Oh that really sucks. I wouldn't classify it as stolen yet so hopefully they'll bring it back late and settle up on the days they had it and late fees.

This would be a nightmare for anyone. I truly hope they catch them or at least contact you. Horrible situation.

It almost sound like you dint have a camera guard follows your equipment.

Hi Tyrone,

If you haven't already please let your Bomb Squad know so we can mark the camera stolen and keep an eye out for it.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the support everyone.

@michael - I will do.

Spoke to the loss adjuster, he reckons there is a big situtation with crims set up to sell Alexa,Red and decent prime lenses over to parts of Asia & Western Asia and they are prepared to invest in their crime. I.e setup companies, pay up front, fake passports. So be more aware than I was

Have made some of the RED users here in Scotland know about it. We're on the look out.

They would be correct. Many of the US cases I've researched over the past few years involve someone who appears to be Americanized or who claims they are a visiting foreigner using fake identification to rent or buy high-end electronic items on non-existent credit and then they take them out of the country piece-by-piece so nobody will know what's going on. Customs can't stop it because it's not possible to check all the little packages that are components.

Here in denmark when a string of rental companies were hit both burglery and fraud - they had fake ID's and at least in one instance claimed they were from the Danish film institute, which ofcourse was a lie... and they knew about the equipment.

- btw fraud is often NOT covered by insurance....

Fraud is covered if you have the correct policy.

Tyrone,
I tried to PM you but your inbox is full.
please free some space so i can send you some info.
cheers

The argument I'm being fed by the police is this case is not criminal, it's civil etc. So at which point does it become criminal then rather than just a breach of t&c?

Camera is insured? They will replace it, no?

Keep us posted.

It's stupid this is so complicated.

You rented your gear, they never returned it. They TOOK it from you. That's theft, involuntary parting and most likely collusion. What else would it be covered under?

Sorry to hear....Yes, unfortunately your right, if a "contract" was written for its use of any kind, its automatically a civil issue. At least in USA law is concerned. The only way to get it listed with a police agency and get an officer to do a stolen report for theft is to....well sort of not tell them there was a contract involved at all, basically (a lie) is all you can do. Im not suggesting you lie to get the cops to cooperate, but I did do that before and I got my stolen stuff back. End of story, as far as your EPIC being "kidnapped" to Iran....your shit out of luck if the police don't confiscate it and hold it for you.
