Hi there,
On a shoot today, after a few takes on an establishing dolly, the Epic suddenly powered down and wouldn't boot back up. Immediately began trouble shooting, held the power button for 15 seconds (several times obviously) all we got was the red light turning amber and the fan turning at slow speed. Initially had it on the quad battery module, removed it, tried a fully charged volt in the side handle, same result. Switched to Red Bricks, same. Switched to AC, same. Pretty confident it's not a power issue. Stripped the camera down, attempting to boot from AC after removing side handle, touch screen and Canon mount, just trying to isolate the issue. Holding the power button down for a slightly longer period gets the fan to kick into high for about five seconds, but then reverts back to slow speed and the amber light remains during this process. Attempted a forced upgrade on the firmware after formatting the SSD using the Mac's disk utility - didn't get far enough into the boot process to read the SSD. I've got a lot of time on the Epic and am very familiar with the system, but at this point feeling like I've exhausted the possible variables, does anyone have any suggestions?

call the person who rented it to you... I've had cameras fail that I rented out and I've promptly got a replacement camera for the shoot if it could not troubleshooted and fixed easily.

Yes, that was one of the first things that we did. I've rented this camera several times and it's been absolutely bulletproof. We're in a relatively isolated location, so getting another camera shipped in isn't a favoured option as it will cost us a couple of days of shooting, but of course that's what we'll have to do, unless someone has a suggestion to try something we may have overlooked.

oh my bad, I thought it was somebody close and could get you the camera same day.

Does the light on the side ever go green? How was the camera operating the last time you used it?

Haven't seen the green light since it went down, just red to indicate power and amber when we try holding down the power button for various test intervals between 10 seconds and two minutes . No strange behaviour earlier in the day, no observable monitor glitches (that I have witnessed on other cameras as a precursor to trouble) Got six takes of a smooth, short dolly move on stainless steel rails, then it suddenly powered down and didn't come back.

Had a similar issue last Sat ourselves on a commercial shoot. After wrapping the first pic our Scarlet shut down and not since has it powered up. We don't even get slow fan movement. It is not even trying to boot. And no ambrr light either, the red light just flashes when the powerbutton is pressed (unless powered via sidehandle when the red light just turns off completely).

At Red they asked me to try powering it with no accessories (sidehandle off etc) and try various combos. Did not help in our case and is being sent back to Red for evaluation. Maybe you'll have better luck!

Rather mild, 17 degrees Celsius , variable cloud, not too humid. I've shot in pretty extreme conditions, freezing cold, blistering hot, humid, 20 miles out to sea, in underwater housings, the epics I've used have all been rock solid until today.

Just upgraded the firmware on a friend's camera here in Germany to 3.2.21 and it is now having the same issues.

Tried going back to earlier firmware, same problem.

Tried different power options, AC, Redvolt, Red Brick, no luck. Stripped back. Still no luck.

It only has 9.5hours runtime on the clock.

My camera here works fine, same firmware.

Try rolling back to an earlier firmware fellas. Get something that is working...

And contact the bomb squad asap...

Hey Ivan,
Rolled back several firmwares, still had issues.

Was able to power up and shoot but throughout the day had the problem return intermittently.

Maybe you should fly to Germany and help us out ;)
