I was wondering, after a 4k scene is done and shot with the Red One and recorded in RedCine. Can one view the 4k clip instantly on an HD monitor, or do the files have to be rendered before viewing? What is the file formate, Redcode, right? Can Redcode be converted into any other formats like Cineon or a DPX file?

thanks

You don't record in REDCINE. REDCINE is the appliction that does all that you request - allows you to view REDCODE files and convert them to whatever you feel like.

I think his actual question was "After recording a 4K scene onto the digital magazine can one view a playback of the shot instantly on the camera LCD VF and/or at video village?"

Playback

Playback

Yes to an available HD output in both recording modes and playback.

The camera can perform real time RAW to RGB processing, White Balance, Gamma and scaling to create a 720p " HD Preview " of the RAW signal being recorded to (played back from) the Digital Magazine.

REDCINE can give you a similar capability with pre-recorded footage, except that the "preview" is on your computer monitor.

Good news - just a quick follow up question, Stuart:

Will the preview/playback from the camera be limited to 720p, or will we be able to output 1080p through the HD-SDI ports as well? It's just that that's probably how I'll be monitoring for the most part (or at least it would be my prefered choice).

I'm guessing since the camera outputs 1080 though HD-SDI whilst recording that it will, but I thought I'd check since the thread is here!

Thank you for the clarification.

Okay so the playback capability is only a 720p draft preview then? Why can it not be 2k or 4k ( I know it's a bit unnecessary, when 720 or 1080 would suffice on HD monitors? Does REDCINE have to process the RAW files down the line to view them in 2k or 4k? If yes how does that process work. I don't need to have something like a renderfarm down in post do I?

I'm a bit confused on this part, and for me, as a cinematographer, this is the most important part of the whole digital workflow.

If you want to take advantage of the RAW based workflow you're going to have to eventually render it.

Think of rendering like development in a film workflow, only instead of a huge vat of chemicals you can do it on your home PC.

If you're working with a post facility they'll have the muscle already to take care of the rendering if you need say an hour of footage from 5 cameras by the end of the day. I would expect about 1 hour to take about 4 to render on one machine. If you have a farm of say 20 procs then you should be able to get your rushes faster than real time.
