The only place I'm happy to see no red.

cannot render effects

cannot render effects

You still cannot render effects such as transitions, or fades.

If you load the footage into FCP 6.0.2 the default sequence settings will be set to ProRes. Then enable unlimited RT (orange bar instead of red) and choose one of the three RT playback resolutions (high, medium, low) and see which one works.

If you have the FCP sequence set to REDCODE then you will not see any orange or red bar, but you can't render since the REDCODE codec does not support encoding to it.

Also, the QuickTime player with codec 1.5.0 will play back in a lower quality (like RT medium resolution in FCP) unless you enable high-quality decoding in the QuickTime player preferences.

What Rob said :)

Rob, this is a very encouraging step, previously I could not set the timeline to Redcode. What is the best guess as to when the other piece of the puzzle will fall into place?

Don't know... but you should be fine leaving the timeline as ProRes with RT set to unlimited, it should work the same or better as setting it to REDCODE.

Got it to work! be sure to turn off external video. My Kona Io was furking with FCP. Playback was smoove with the "M" quicktime, but choppy with the "H"

I dropped a 1K QuickTime reference movie into a timeline on my 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro (current model), let Final Cut set the sequence up the way it wanted to, and switched to Unlimited RT. It works! I can play back with the 'Medium' quality setting without dropping frames for straight cuts. If I switch to 'Dynamic' quality so FCP can drop things if it starts dropping frames, I can even dissolve between two frames in real-time. Rendering a sequence out to a stand-alone ProRes file works fine as well.

This is starting to look like the start of a really compelling workflow for no-budget indies.

Any word on when the QuickTime reference movie workflow will support feeding full-quality 2K (full demosaic from 4K scaled to 2K) into QuickTime apps, so FCP can be used for online 2K finishing straight from Redcode files?

How about full-quality 4K? It would be awesome to be able to feed 4K into Shake, key it, and send it out to 2K ProRes, without having to render out huge DPX or TIFF sequences at any point.

Chris: for a lot of stuff the current quality should be good enough. But we are working on even higher quality for the QT codec. No ETA on that yet.

Rob,

This is amazing. I can't thank you guys enough!!

I'm cutting Redcode proxies in Realtime on a Macbook Pro.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have truly arrived!!!

Thanks, and you're welcome! :)

I second that, great work Rob.

Drive and probably CPU issue. I'm working on improvements....

Update:
Faster drive solved the problem. Clips play through at 1K looking fine. Also works off internal drive. This is great! You can cut Red footage on a Macbook pro, and drop it on a timeline on set to see if shots are cutting.

Rob Lohman, America tips its hat to you.

2K also plays consisently but not at 24fps, but that's what I was expecting.
