Renaming RED Folders on Set?

Hello gentlemen, Im going to be helping out a friend on set tomorrow and I was wondering what the best way to organize the Red folders the camera gives us.

Previously, I have worked on a film where the only organizing on set was by Day and Camera, followed by the RDM for the 'reel and then the RDC Folders for the scenes. The RDM folder was something like A001_1127XX giving us the Reel and the Date it was shot. Should this be renamed for any reason or is it better to leave it alone as is? Would something like Reel01_12/27/2011.RDC be okay to name it as? Its just easier on the eyes i guess. This part isnt a big deal as it tells me the Camera, Reel and Date, this folder name makes sense.

I guess my bigger question is , can I rename the RDC folers? Sure, the camera includes the Reel in the RDC folder name, but the rest of the info doesnt tell me what scene or take it is.

Last time i worked on a RED project, I left the hard drive folders names unchanged as named by the camera, and I renamed everything in FCP.

Ive read that I should NOT rename the files, but can i rename the RDC folders to say, Scene 7b_Take 2_Cam A , without having to worry that I screwed something up later down the line by renaming the folders?

Or should i just start a FCP file and rename there and leave the folders alone?

Thanks guys,

art

You should definitely NOT rename rushes files or folders, or you will at best limit your post workflows, and at worst make reconforms impossible or extremely manual (read expensive in time, money and effort).

Leave any renaming for WITHIN NLEs only.

Also naming files with slashes is a recipe for major problems.

Use clapperboards and logging tools like Clipfinder to log Scene and Take info.
