  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone advise whether a run/stop switch [on Ronford baker moosebars] that works with Red One's GPIO socket will work on Epic -x?
Checking the wiring diagram for the Epic "sync" interface it looks pretty similar....
Thanks for any info.

Nope, RedOne and Epic triggers are different. Not only the Plug is different, but also the whole circuit.

:(
so that's changed then....like the timecode outputs.
So much for a modular system - I'm going to have a lot of expensive R1 accessories that are now junk,
and Epic accessories aren't exactly looking cheap.
Thanks for the response Manuel.

I'm slowly developing a box that will do the conversion from R1 to Epic for power, trigger (including tally) and accessory power.

If I hear of more interest in one, I'll speed up development.

Would LOVE a simple release- ON/OFF button I could tether to handle with a cable running back to the Brain/power box (for release, as I understand it requires power). Keep all the bulk at the Brain so we can have as small a form-factor button assy on the handle....

yah - nicely priced but bulky switch box makes handle-use clumsy... now if the battery box was up at the Brain...
And I guess we need to get someone on a SINGLE cable tie-in to the Brain, rather than the 3-connector piece RED sells.
Thanks Mitch...

Instead of the cable you could now get a B-Box for Wooden Camera.

B-Box is neat, but, if you don't want the other features, with the andyfilms unit it adds up to $500+ - for a cable release :(

Surely someone is working on a small, single cable, panhandle-mounted remote release ????

We intend to build some for our own hand held rigs as a handle type switch. It terminates in Lemo. The darn thing needs power this is the main issue in keeping it small as a batter is required. I wish some one would make this commercialy.

i ordered electra protheus vmount from AP.
this combo is like the alexa + module but just for the Epic.
eagerly waiting for this piece.

it has everything you can think of needed in a cinestyle shooting.

Bad form to quote oneself and even worse to crosspost, but how about a tethered DSMC side handle?

Basically a plate with contacts to attach to the Brain at the Side Handle attachment point, another plate with pogo pins to attach to the Side Handle and a cable in-between. This would allow the Side Handle to be used in place of a grip on a shoulder rig, or attach to a tripod handle. No electronics so a third party should be able to design and manufacture it pretty quickly and easily. RED has other priorities right now. RedMote is not a substitute since I only have two hands and generally operate solo. I started a thread with this suggestion a week or so ago and there was interest, but not a lot of attention. If you want this built, show some interest and I'm sure someone will step forward.

Not perfect ergonomically, but has the benefit of keeping all those buttons and dials available. Individual buttons can be disabled and entire keysets saved as presets. Price around $500 would seem more than fair.

Steve - bulk/price the problem for those of us wanting a simple on-off release IMHO....

@stu Understood. Another solution that won't work for most, but will work for me in one configuration I'm considering: the SD Pix 240 can trigger recording with a standard LANC, or the same jack can be configured (in menus) for a simple momentary switch.

Is the bulk/power requirement because of changes to the wiring?
The one here - http://www.ronfordbaker.co.uk/video.html - was tiny and worked fine with Red One.

The Circuit in the Epic manual suggests it needs 5V, so I guess thats what we have to build. Infact the Ronford switch would be perfect for the switch and mounting arrangement, but it will need the rest of the circuit to work with Epic. Perhaps this might work in a small outboard box/housing and then connect to the 4 pin Lemo.

a small box that does conversion and power to ARRI RS would be preferred here.
Simple industry standard.
Looks like Brian understood that, I'd just prefer a simpler solution, much like the ET box was for the ONE, and now Wooden Camera and Spacecam offer it for Epic.
Just power inside to accomplish this special mission and lets get off with a simple GPI again.

While the circuit in the manual does say 5V, 3.3V does work. IMHO 3.3 is safer. Also keep in mind that this trigger circuit is drawing very little power so even small watch batteries should do the job. The circuit in the manual has LED to indicate the current state, but if you're trying to keep it ultra simple, simply supplying 3.3V to the correct pin will run the camera. When the voltage stops (goes to 0V), the camera stops.

Agreed. Id like to find a Epic version of the Origio type device or the switch on the Ronford handle grip. It must be possible.

Id be interested to know if Camera operators prefer a push to start push to stop switch or rocker switch rather like the Aaton hand grip. A rocker switch always seems a much more positive control to me.
