Hey,

I'm in need of a remote controlled head capable of handling the Red camera from a crane. Do you have any suggestions? Varizoom has the MC100, but it only handles up to 30 pounds: http://varizoom.com/products/motion/vzmc100.html

30 lbs is ok, but if I add a teleprompter onto the unit it might exceed 45 lbs.

Thanks for your help.

We used the Secced lightweight crane on the last feature we worked on and it held the Red One with basic setup no problem:

The only trick was as the camera can be pretty long we had to move the HDD/battery portion to the lower rails to allow the head to go 90 degrees vertical, but it wasn't a big deal as you can see :)

Paul,

That looks like a really great crane! It seems to be pretty light-weight as well. Is the head on that crane made by Secced or did you purchase it separately?

Talon Head is great - We have one for rental in LA with a triangle Jib.

Small heads like the Secced make me crazy, so fussy about balance and wobble city in the wind. It depends on your shoot and expectations, but they work better with light cameras more like the HVX than a Red.

Thanks Steve. Any idea on a round-about price for the SL Pod Mini? There aren't any prices on their website.

If I remember correctly, it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $800-$900 a day, but don't quote me on it! :tongue_smilie:

Not my crane sorry, it was a rental for the movie through the grip company involved.

Matt, it was at the edge of its weight limit but functioned no problem. I imagine it'll be a great option for the smaller/lighter Epic.

Did you adjust exposure remotely?

I've seen solutions for Iris but I want to adjust the exposure time remotely.

Paul do you know which model it is? Is it the Traveler? http://www.secced.com/products1b.asp

No remote adjustment on this occasion.

What do you mean by remote exposure time? You mean altering the shutter speed during the shot?

Cheers,

Paul

Yes, If light changes and I don't want to take down the rig and adjust with ND-filters or Iris (DoF).

Remotely adjusting shutter speed would be usably for me.

I don´t know how you could do this on a Red One... I guess you´ll have to wait for Epic-Scarlet and RedMote?
I´ve used the Red in a Jimmy Jib Triangle with its regular head, focus on a Bartech, iris on the Jib iris control with some ingenuity and the proper gear, Remote Start-Stop on Origo with long cable... excellent results.
