  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: Release Build 20 Firmware (v20.1.3)

Hey Deanan,

Would this have to be run on the Red Drive, or can I run it on the corrupted file I copied across? Original drive is now back with its owner and reformatted.

REDundead may be able to pull out the last missing R3D.

I have downloaded the .dmg file for Build 20 from the RED site... but in case I need Build 17 still, where can I find that .dmg? There is a link on the Red site that says "Download" for Build 17, but nothing happens...

It should be run on the original disk.

New firmware 2 min before shoot.

Build the camera, download 20.1.3, flash camera, black calibrate, just in time DOP need camera, carry camera to jib -> shoot for 8h, No crash, no reboot, no problem at all. :emote_hippie:

Ai cunhece...

Very nice to hear.

At the end of a 70 minute take (proxies definitely OFF) it just locked in POST for about 15 minutes, after which we had to cut the power to prepare for the next show.

We got everything except the last R3D, which is obviously corrupt, so it plays fine, just cuts off a few minutes early.

Is this more likely to be a drive issue or camera issue?

I also had this issue. I slowed this by turning proxies ON!!! The post process is longer, but no corrupt R3D.

Hey all:

I've seen people on this board asking for image samples. I had a Build 17 and a Build 20 camera on set today and we tested both under identical conditions, both at 3200K and 5600K.

All our lighting was natural sunlight, HMI and daylight Kino's. The image quality was reduced so I could upload for free... if anyone wants to host the 4K .tiff files, I'd be happy to share them at full size.

These are all from the .R3Ds and viewed in REDSpace.

On second thought, these seem to be big enough...

Hi Drew - I think this is an example where in both cases the footage isn't under exposed enough to see much of a difference, the only area where the noise really shows through to me in the Build 17 Tungsten is in the deep recesses of the curtains in the background and even them i'm not entirely sure if that is not compression artifacting from the jpeg.

Anyone else see anything I don't that identifies the difference in build, given these conditions?

second question is if you rendered B17 footage with B17 conversion software and B20 footage with B20 conversion software, because the real magic happens in Redalert or Redline or Redcine.....

These tests were all we had time for; Rainer, what "conversion software" do you speak of? These were .tiff files extracted from the .R3Ds in RedAlert! on-the-fly.

Yes if you convert for example footage shot on a camera with B17 running on it with RedAlert which is Version 20 you are applying the new color science. If you want to see the real difference between old and new, you need to convert with the old RedAlert or Redcine software. The new camera software B20 gives you the appropriate white balance in the monitoring and thats all, the new color science is applied in the conversion software at RedAlert, Redline, Redcine....
The camera captures the same signal as in B17, the magic happens in the software at debayering.
The real difference you can see in tungsten light, because the camera has its sweetspot at daylight. And there you can see a huge difference between old and new.....

got it ?

best,
rainer

Underwater Build 20.1.3

Underwater Build 20.1.3

WoW!
very noticeable results underwater using the new build. Am i right or wrong in noticing the camera seems to now have a better "low light" capability? seems to show a better low light capability when shooting underwater. Next time i have my latest u/w footage out from build 20, i'll post a few jpgs.

In short, a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in shooting underwater with build 20.1.3

Yes, you are definitely right! Much lower noise, especially in the blue channel, which I imagine would make a huge difference under water.

Definitely low noise... a brand new camera.
I'll post some picts of our last night tests on Pablo.
Cheers
