Thanks Brent .... two quick questions - on the installation guide it says:

Hardware Requirements.

PCI-e x16 physical slot providing at least 8 lanes (x8)
2048 MB RAM

1) Does that imply that x16 lane slot is best or that Rocket will run OK in an 8 lane slot?

2) 2 gb of RAM - is that a minimum of 2gb in total or an extra 2gb on top of existing RAM?

Brent, the Lic. Agreement for the rocket installer lists:

1 RED ALERT!
1 RED ALERT-X
1 REDCINE
1 REDCINE-X
1 RED QUICK
1 REDLINE
1 REDRUSHES
1 REDRAD
1 RED ADOBE CS4 INSTALLER
1 RED ROCKET
1 ROCKETCINE-X

But I'm not seeing any of the new apps? Am I crazy?

That is a list of apps covered by the SLA. Some have yet to be released, but when they are, they are covered in the SLA.

#1 is for power. A 16 physical slot will provide enough power for RED Rocket. However, a x8 slot (physical) may or may not depending on the motherboard. It's best to use a x16 physical to be sure.

#2, since you'll be moving alot of data around at 4k or 2k, 2GB is a recommended minimum but the more the better.

Thanks Deanan ... so a free x16 lane slot and 8gb of RAM should do it .... not sure where we going to put all the cards ... x16 GPU + Kona 3 + Fiber Channel + eSATA .... its getting mighty tight in there.

BTW, great work on getting the RED Rocket out to the market place so quickly - we've been working on a very cool RED feature for the last few weeks ... full 4k debayer to ProRes4444 in Color .... man-oh-man does the rendering time take a hit (even with a decent Render Farm) .... don't suppose you've tested RR with Color 1.5 and full debayer to ProRes4444 yet? - would love to know what you've got the render times down to.

RED ONE plus full 4k debayer to ProRes4444 is an awesome combination ... just needs a bit of RR TLC.

Cheers,
Neil

We're working on a new QT encoding engine for Rocket that will be tuned for rocket's speed (balanced for cpu and rocket). We're very excited about getting this new QT engine out asap.

Most excellent news .... any idea when you'll have some beta code? .... we had Rodney Charters, ASC, come in yesterday and we showed him the feature we're grading for Toronto .... he was blown away by the image quality of the full 4k debayer to ProRes4444 ... he has a great eye for the nuances of RED RAW when graded properly. We had to give Rodney one of our boxes of FCS 3 so he could go home and play with it (in between shooting 24) .... we "neglected" to tell him about the render times but he already knew that RR is going to move the goal posts.

Are you going to have a 10 and 12 bit HD-SDI driver soon as well? ProRes4444 images look really great projected through dual link SDI.

As ever with RED and Apple, the world keeps changing at an amazing pace.

Keep up the good work!
Neil

The RED Rocket is fast, thanks so much for making it, honestly, I'm near speachless about how fast this thing is, we've been playing with it at REDucation and playing it back on the 4k projector.

No super proper tests yet, but it will easily hit the specs that the official RED folks have posted and probably even more once things get some time to be ironed out.

If you're planning on writing DPX files with this thing, I really hope you've got a lot of storage space and that it's more than 1000 MB/sec, because this thing is so fast.

..Honestly, this card is about as disruptive as the RED One. It's a game changer.

DVS builds pretty amazing stuff, right ?-)

Hi Deanan,

any way to use your engine, but the QT standard dialogue ? I'd like to use and try other Codecs and I know of others who would as well. Right now the system is limited to the built-in Codecs (including the Avid-Codec).
If you'd allow that, all available Codecs would show up including all their options.

Note that v1.0.4 of RED Rocket Installer was recently posted. It is only really applicable for when you use ROCKETcine-X and is also part of the ROCKETcine-X download package from www.red.com/support ....

Thanks, BC
