  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Release It Already

I still don't get it. What is RED waiting for?
Prototype still buggy, since... 5 years?

After showing off from year to year with the specs I think
it is time to release or just let it die.
It is not good marketing to bash other competitors, but having
no valuable product.

Maybe RED noted, that the Scarlet already lost market position,
due to Panasonic and Sony releases.

Yeah, I know..... Scarlet records in RAW! Yeah hey....

But I can have any camera with clean 4k HDMI out and record it direcly to HDD
with a losless compressor, which is even faster than the RED RAW codec.

As already mentioned months and years ago: Scarlet will never come.
Canon is already working on a new product, which is going to attack that Sony F3
for a much lower price. And all other are not slepping in meanwhile.

There is exciting in the air! :-)

Tom, by all means go and invest in Canon and Sony!! That means one less person increasing the length of the queue, which will already be enormous, for the Scarlet ;)

I'm a middle aged novice. Bought a Canon XL2 to have fun with and learn a bit about cinema. Also upped my adobe Design Suite to Master Suite to get Premiere Pro and After Effects. I feel like a genius now.

Was looking heavily at Canon, Sony etc to get a nice HD camera. Stumbled onto the RED website and knew that Scarlet was made for me. Those other companies don't tell you what is in their pipeline so you aren't waiting for cameras you only hear rumors about. RED tells you virtually everything they are up to. Totally different concepts. Jim Jannard is doing something unique that some will never comprehend. Thanks RED.

You and I are in much the same place, though I was a pro shooter in the 70's and 80's. Now just a serious hobbyist, also with a GL2. Scarlet is a dream come true. An affordable high quality replacement for a 16mm Bolex in my case.

I am also in this category , shooting on gl2 and dvx1000 mainly although have shot film and red a bit . I am not willing to except hd as the standard to upgrade too so waiting for scarlet .

Other than an afternoon of hands on and introduction to the Red 1 with an owner, and playing around with R3d clips in various versions of Redcine, I haven't shot with Red cameras. But that was enough to know that raw acquisition is what I want for my next camera. No more shooting encoded video with the mediocre codecs available in under $10k HD cams. Redcode rocks!

Anyone feel my pain? Can we get a release date?

I am well aware of the RED WAY of doing things - secretive and no need to know etc. Similar to Apple. It would be a huge benefit to thousands of people though if we had some idea around a release date / month / year / century.

Smiling.

I know I'm replying to a very old post, put the thread is still alive and the above comment is just plain wrong... Do you know of any upcoming Apple product? Have you ever? No! Apple don't announce their products ahead of time, and they never have as far as I know, just like most companies. When I bought my DVX-100, a few weeks later Panasonic released the DVX-100A which corrected a number of the bugs and defaults of the 100, among which no 16:9. Red on the other hand, although they have changed their policy now, not due to all the complaining, but due to the competition taking note of their announcements and trying to counter their offers. Anyhow Red have in the past announced the products they were working on, sometimes very early on, so early in fact that the products' specs changed as the release date approached, usually for the better. And yes they are positive, hopeful and in fact as they have said themselves inexperienced, that they always think their products will be finished and available a long time before they really are. Of course it is very frustrating for us, the customers, yet we know what's coming, not when, but it's better than not even knowing what's coming, at least I think so. It's always the same scenario, if you have a need for a product, a real need, to shoot a film for example, well them you find the best (that being a vague term, determined by your budget, your capabilities, the type of project, your planned workflow, your goal/aim, etc.) tool available at the time, and you go ahead. Tools are tools, they dont determine what you make, they just help you to make whatever you want to make.

Anyhow, Red is not like Apple, Red is not like any other company. Red, like any other company have their strong and weak points, have their advocates and their enemies. To each his own.

Cheers,
Damien

Patience...is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait...Any of these sound familiar? As much as I want the Scarlet to be out...I am disappointed in the amount of complaining on here. If you are relying this heavily on a camera for your work/hobby, then find something else to do...because it is not all about the camera...I personally am taking this time to shoot with what I already have as much as I can, and refine my skills so that when this does come out...I am ready for it ;)

So for me, I will run the race with patience, and to those who do too...thanks! Less garbage posts to read. ;)

Cheers!

it's funny that people think that's the RED WAY of doing things, considering RED's story started on dvxuser and most thought it was just another vaporware.
they used to talk to much and got hurt by that (missing deadlines that were set in people's mind because someone from RED posted in a forum) so they decided to turn it way down.
it's exactly posts like yours that caused that.

to the point of actually releasing the damn thing. like any product, if you don't have a "lock" date you can keep updating it forever. other cameras get released causing RED to reevaluate the scarlet and delay it again instead of releasing it and working on scarlet 2.0 with feedback from us on 1.0.

Scarlet along with the Epics was locked for production as far as the hardware early last winter. The real hold up now is parts availability, not Red's fault. I'm sure that as soon as they have their supply chain problems solved they will announce a release date and pricing details. Until then Red doesn't know enough themselves to set a firm date and they won't guesstimate anymore because they have been bitten in the past when they couldn't meet the targets they set.
Software will be in a continual state of flux for these cameras even after they are released just as it has been and continues to be for Red 1. As software and features improve they will continually update your Scarlet for free as long as it is a viable product. Nobody is more anxious to get Scarlet out there than Red.
The latest news is that they expect to start shipping Epic-X stage 2 around September and Scarlet will be behind that by some number of weeks or a couple of months for sure.

The also want to make a camera that works with their other cameras. Scarlet and Epic is essentially the same and they want to be able to support both at the same time. Yes, right now it's a hardware parts issue because of the earthquake in Japan, but the whole thing is that they didn't have their "map" overviewing their products.

When looking into the Scarlet FAQ it says that they didn't know for whom this camera was for, they needed to rethink and came up with dividing scarlet and epic into broadcast/film catagories.

So they are trying to give out a whole package of solutions, together with Red Stations, Red Rays, Red Rockets, 4K projectors, lenses etc.
Arri for example works on the Alexa for an intensive amount of time, but they locked their specs from the day one it seems.
You need to upgrade and pay more money outside of their outrageous amount for the Alexa body to be able to shoot at 3K instead of 1080p.
Red tries to release a camera that's up to date with technology today. This is a very hard thing to do in a constantly moving world and this is why they haven't released it yet.

Shooting with the Alexa is like watching a HDready TV, it's nice, but half way there.

Remember the original specs of the Scarlet? What are we gonna get now? HDRx, Mysterium-X, Redmote etc.
I for one is really happy that Red has been so open about what they are doing. I seriously hate when companies are closed off, especially to customers who are loyal. Like Apple, who has alot of loyal customers and they don't care if they screw them over.

I remember when I read the thread at DVXuser and while everyone said it was vaporware I looked at that weird looking metal 3D render of something and thought to myself this is it, this is gonna be something else. And while everyone just laughed at me when I spoke my hopes and dreams about it, I think they are quiet today or shooting with a "HDready" camera just because they are still stuck up in their vaporware opinions.

I'm shooting with a Canon DSLR right now. But it's kind of wonky. I would like an actual camera made for shooting movies. I was gonna get something like the FS100, which really does make a nice picture.

But, I would also like to move up from 1080p. I think I"m gonna wait, and just leap frog to either Scarlet, or an Epic-S.

Maybe baby steps is the way to go, and I'll start with the Scarlet, then move up to the Epic S.
