  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Release date?

Well on the bright side every day without a RED is a day I make a few bucks in interest. :D

Same here. Also, in Australia we have the added advantage of our exchange rate slowly climbing back up - right now the complete fixed Scarlet package (US$3750) is about AU$960 (US$750) cheaper than if it had come out in January. I'm hoping for an seven to ten cent increase before it's released, which should save $400 - $500 (AU) more.

$750?!!

I've been waiting for many months now to purchase a Scarlet...I may have to purchase another camera in lieu of the RED product. Would be incredibly helpful if RED alerted us to slipped dates or other problems in the release date for the Scarlet. Not sure how much longer I can wait...

Jim said this in referring to EpicX and it's probably a good way to approach the Scarlet release date.
We are going to take whatever time is necessary to make each product better than the last.

Jim

If you have a project you need to shoot now or this Summer it's better to pick another camera. No one knows when exactly this will be released or in what quantity.

It will be a very long time before we see Scarlet in our hands. I am getting an GH1 in the meantime. Make money with it and wait more for the Scarlet.

I am sure this says all.

First units, end of 2009 (same as fall 2009). First massive delivery comes in 1Q 2010. For Monstro sensor based models, not earlier than summer of 2010. I'd guess three years after RED ONE -- bulk delivery with luck, we all hope.

My bet.

E. :-)

I think the reason that Red hasn't updated the delivery dates is because they themselves don't know. My interpretation of Jim's posts is that if everything goes right, then they'll be a few months behind the original schedule. But if something goes wrong, like the ASIC doesn't work the first time, then all bets are off.

I'm sure Jim will post a new delivery date when he has more confidence that he can meet it. Red was accused of not living up to their promises when the Red One was delayed, so he probably wants to minimize that this time around.

Patience, grasshoppa.

This is all understandable but I think *some* kind of update is in order. There seem to be quite a few people who are anxious to get an update on where they are, change in specs, etc.

It seems the DSLR camp are encroaching on this space and are able to ramp up production on some pretty impressive shooters in a very small timeframe. I think the Scarlet will blow away all of the current crop of crippled DSLR shooters but who's to say they aren't gunning for Red. We just might see them putting together a package that can come close to what Scarlet should be capable of, and maybe doing it in a much shorter turn around time.

I know I'd personally like to where the Scarlet progress is.

Well, i would think you have to make the camera work in the first place. It is a lot easier said than done. If it was as easy as advertised don't you think one of the big companies would have done a camera like Scarlet long ago? I hope it materializes soon but...

Just a quick post to say that I too would love to hear an updated schedule. Like many folks, I'm looking to buy a new camera this Summer and it would be awesome to know more about RED's progress so I can make an informed buying decision. But I completely understand that RED don't want to give away any information which may be used against them by their competitors.

Why would they? Seeing as how the current crop of HD-video-capable digicams is needlessly (though probably unintentionally) crippled, it's apparent that the big camera companies don't really care much about Red or its target market.

I think you may be right. I think Canon was really taken by surprise when the 5DmkII found "success" with the film/video market. Although I get the impression that the 5DmkII's success has woken Canon up to the market.

Arg... I need to buy a camera for a new project... GH1? 5DmkII? Wait for Scarlet? Nikon D400/D750?!?

Would love to buy a Scarlet if we can ever get a real release date. It's just a frustrating time for many of us that are ready to buy now, or willing to wait if we know for sure when we'll get the goods.

Fortune favors the bold. I want to see that release date, and I'm willing throw paper down to see this thing come out and kick ass. I think Red should pick their date, and to hell with the rest of the industry. I understand the whole previous issues with the Red One being delayed over and over. But the solution, in my opinion, isn't to be more vague about a release date. The solution is to press forward, and come hell or high water, deliver the final product. And there will be much rejoicing when that day comes! But in the meantime, we need that release date. Or, at the very least, give us a date that you will announce the release date, preferably in the next week :).

I'm hoping by mid-july we'll have something - maybe not a release date set in stone but a major progress report saying that they are on for the Fall delivery date.
I hope to own a Cinema Scarlet by November 1st, but I'm not planning on it. I would love to start on my next feature film today, but I told myself I was gonna wait on the Scarlet and I have plenty to do with my day job (video game producer)

Ah yes I forgot that Red has also innovated their way into a new seasonal calendar slightly skewed from the one the rest of us use here on planet Earth but far, far better. I guess Jan, Feb and March 09 were just the cold months of spring. Seriously though, are you claiming this or did you read it somewhere on the boards? Who from Red said anything about december 09 being the quoted "winter 09 ?"

HAHA, I agree, but yes it was meant as December 09, not early 09. There was never any plan to release any Scarlets early in 2009.

I must agree, though, that here on planet earth WINTER '09 is long over, and it's officially summer in a few days. It's kind of ridiculous to say "winter '09" because there are only about 10 days of actual winter at the end of 2009, while there are almost 3 months of winter at the start. So, I have to agree, that's the improper use of seasons and is frankly confusing.

Winter 2009 is January through March. Spring 2009 is April through June. Summer is July through September. And Fall is October through December. It just makes more sense that way.
