I wouldn't expect Scarlet for at least another 12-24 months.

I think the people are saying this don't quite understand how the DSMC system works. The only way we don't see Scarlet for another 12 months is if RED runs into a major engineering problem that hits the entire DSMC line.

The 2/3" cinema Scarlet has no totally unique parts. Sure the brain may have a few less ASICs and a smaller version of the Mysterium-X chip but every single module will be exactly the same as the ones being tested on the "Tattoo" cameras at the end of this year.

Stage 1 - 3 are the only ones that have to be completed before the 2/3" Scarlets start shipping. RED lists the 2/3" Scarlet as coming after the S35 Epic but that doesn't mean they have to fulfill every single S35 Epic order that comes in before they can start shipping Scarlets. In fact Scarlets could start shipping the day after the first S35 Epic.

I don't think it is nearly as bad as some of you think.

I was hoping for some kind of "real" update for Scarlet (in terms of due date) and was pretty disappointed. From a business perspective, I completely understand their stance - they are focusing solely on the high-end market where they will make more of a return for all of their R&D.

Did you not see the pictures of the completed lens unit for the 2/3" Scarlet? These cameras are obviously pretty close to being completed, and as the RED guys have said, the cameras are in simultaneous development. The FF35 Scarlet might not come out for another 12 - 24 months, but I bet we'll see the 2/3" start shipping sometime around March or April, and the S35 around August at least...

Has anyone seen these? "SCARLET CANCELLED" ?!?
I guess there is some re-thinking going on... I trust that they know what they're doing..
Personally, I've always had the philosophy of "once it's released... it's out there for a long time... isn't it better to polish up the edits... take the time and do the best you can.
We'll just have to keep the faith and wait... "no whine before its time..."
Best Regards

Dale those articles are from over a year ago, 9/23/08.

Not only is that a terribly old article, but also one that was terribly misleading (and journalistically dishonest) in it's wording. The Scarlet was never cancelled; Jannard said they were scrapping the design and rethinking it, that's all.

I thought the S35 would be the first Scarlet they release?

Well, it may all be a question of terminology.

When they say Tattoo's will be "beta", what they really mean is "alpha" (it won't really work, initially), when they say stage 2 begins early 2010, well, yes, it means that production will begin around that time and they will start delivering cameras to Red One owners, i.e. to people used to the glitches of that camea (firmware), so yes, it will probably be "rather beta". 2/3" Scarlet's relatively low price means a relative mass market for Red, and they probably are well advised not to bring out that camera before it is ready. Or, they may be delivering first again to Red One owners.

As long as there is no sample footage at all, I doubt that release can really be scheduled. They do not seem to have a single fully operational prototype.
