Hey all, Sony bought up our independent film, Detention, last year after it premiered at the South By Southwest Festival... This was shot pre-Epics on Red Ones with Hawk and Kowa anamorphics and will receive a little trial-release on April 13 in 10 US cities and 2 Canadian cities... If it preforms well, it will expand... If not, it will live out its life on demand, cable and blu ray... We're hoping to generate enough interest for this limited run to warrant widening the release. If you live in one of these cities, please go to detentionmovie.com and see which theater it's playing at in your area.

US: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle.

Canada: Toronto, Halifax

You can also read all about how we made the movie and how I tackled the cinematography in the April issue of American Cinematographer... And maybe THAT will spark your interest.

Cheers!

Yep... I work with Fletcher every week! Great guy!

Well you're in Toronto! If you can check it out on the weekend of the 13th, you may very well help the longevity of this movie! Every butt in a seat is appreciated... Plus if it EVER makes a profit, I may finally get paid for my work on it!

;-)

Apparently the April issue will be given out at NAB as well, so grab a copy and look for my Detention article. It's out the weekend before, please try and catch it in the theater for it's hopefully not too short run!

Hey all... This months issue of American Cinematographer details how we shot this film and is on newsstands now. And if you're in one of the 10 US cities where we premiere this April 13th be sure to find the theater paying it at detentionmovie.com!

Joseph Kahn gave a lecture today in Miami I was able to catch, spoke a lot about detention. I was thinking to myself damn I read about this movie on reduser the night before! I think its a great way to promote a film, connecting with filmmakers, sharing experiences, advice, etc. Great stuff and a very cool guy, sure before the lecture I was considering going, but now I'll definitely go see it.

Carlos,

That's awesome. Thanks!

Joseph is working his ass off to promote the film. We are getting zero support from Sony on promoting it. The guy at Sony who loved it from South By Southwest and bought the film, promptly left Sony... So the film got dumped on people who don't really care if it succeeds or not! They own it, why would they NOT want to make money on it? Especially with Josh Hutcherson in it who is co-lead of the Hunger Games currently cleaning up at the box office... I'll never understand Studio's logic, or lack there of, sometimes.

Joseph has been traveling on his own dime to each city it's playing in and lining up speaking engagements and morning talk show interviews. We're trying to get the word out there on a grass-routes level, so we are keeping our fingers crossed we are able to raise enough awareness that people find where it's playing and check it out. It'd be really nice to EXPAND the screens it plays at, as opposed to dissolve quietly away into obscurity.

Hey Chris, I tried messaging you but your inbox was full. cheers

Christopher,

Did you like the Kowa's? and how do they perform compared to V-lites?

The Kowas are cool for a little softer, more flares look, but there are only 4 focal lengths. So not really a complete enough set to shoot a whole movie on.

The release date is here! Anyone interested in my work can now check out Detention this weekend!

Bear in mind that this film has thus far only gotten a very limited release opening today in 10 cities.

Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Burbank, Miami, New York, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.

Try and catch it this week if you can, it may not be around next week, unless SONY pulls there heads out of their asses and expands the release larger, based on performance this week!

As an added incentive, anyone catching the flick will be entitled to ask me ANYTHING about how it was done and I'll write a novel of details for ya! Even beyond the extensive write-up I did in this month's American Cinematographer article...

Chris, not sure if I can make it out to see it, but I bought a pair of tickets for Saturday night anyway :)
