  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Refreshed iMac lineup...

I've been waiting for this refresh hoping that along with the new Mac Pro they would announce a 4K cinema display.

Does anybody know if you could drive a 39" Seiki UHD from this if the CPU/GPU options are maxed out?

would love to know how that new 4gb vram compares to the "old" 2 vram card?

The current Seiki UHDTV is garbage. Don't waste your money. In several months, you'll have plenty of options to choose from for 4K displays and there will probably be a new Apple Cinema Display in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the advice. Rephrasing the question: does anybody know if this will drive any 4K display with the CPU/GPU options maxed?

Not likely. I don't know of anyone getting any of the displays to work and Apple doesn't say anything about their products being 4K compatible. Perhaps with the next OS revision it will come but not now so far as can be seen.

I find it strange they would announce these now and not with Mavericks. For the Mac Pro which more than likely will launch with Mavericks they are already announcing 4K support.

It looks like they are tying Mavericks to the Pro products as far as promoting it goes and there are updates expected in the next two months.

How powerful/flexible is this new imac vs what we know about the new Mac Pro? This new imac would be about $4000 in best configuration.

i don't expect a big jump in CPU power, mavericks will probably squeeze a little more out of it with better management....i don't really use the internal storage, but the new pci-e ssd should be as fast as the Air now....the real interesting part is the new 4vram option....although the 780m has the same number of cuda cores as the 680mx (according to the nvidia site)...davinci starts to choke with 2vram and now with the new rcx using gpu debayer the extra 2vram have to make a difference....
all in all an exciting bump.....and i think the whole line got a little cheaper now as well....so good news all around...

I would definitely jump on it if it had a hexacore. But that might eat up into the mac pro's market.

OK update and I understand why it's a mostly silent update and coming before the Mac Pro & Mavericks. They don't want to detract. I'm bummed that there's no 4K/ retina display option.

Maybe because they don't want to detract on that part to? 'Imac retina' released at same time MacPro is released. (4k Retina Imac would drift into the Pro would pricewise...)
IF they would release such an Imac it wouldn't be strange to release it then...

Who says the Mac cpu line is dead, look at the numbers for comments on that topic.
That rivals the iPhone ones.

It just isn't feasible right now. Two years from now, sure. But not now. Apple has to have sources for good 4K panels and they would rather go to the Koreans than the Chinese/Taiwanese for those given the quality difference. Guess who is leading that market right now? It isn't the Koreans.

Sharp / LG have a 29" 4K panel slated for mass production, actually I've heard that it is in full production and someone is buying large quantities. Apparently it's not going into the iMac. :(

Apple keeps yammering on about "retina" on the desktop and 4K+ (note the plus) support with the new Mac Pro. Will be interesting to see what they come out with. I'm thinking we'll see a "retina" Pro display along with the new Mac Pro. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but it makes a lot of sense and Thunderbolt 2 is the right interface to handle it.

a new apple "cinema" display is long overdue and i think a launch with the new Mac Pro...bringing it all to 4K (+) makes sense...
i am excited to see the new iMac.....and in all fairness, i don't think it is realistic to expect a 27" retina/4K display with a built in cpu (and everything else) for less then 2000$...yet...
i was hoping of r thunderbolt2 (a little bit) but realistically, by the time anything TB2 ships, the mac pro will be out and and that (with a new display) will be in a different league price wise....
i am just happy to have a 4vram option....
