  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reflecmedia's LiteRing/Chromatte w/ Red

Bob, where were you when I needed you? :-) I was looking anywhere and everywhere for a rental recently and posted on these boards. Surprisingly few people rent the 10x12 drapes and basemattes, which are necessary for full body shots using Reflecmedia.

I did eventually find someone who bought one just to rent it to me for a full week.

To the orignal poster: You will NOT be disappointed in Reflecmedia no matter what your capture is. We have done HDV, DV, 8 bit uncompressed, HD uncompressed...always with the same result: excellent and easy keys.

Great and amazing system. We are using a setup in Hawaii next week. (Yes, going to Hawaii to shoot people on a greenscreen. )

Thanks.

Hey Casey, was wondering what you've been using to pull the keys and have you had any problems working around the dark halo that the green ring throws off? I also find that my background is really splotchy. Any help is appreciated.

Best,
David

I used to work for Play and demonstrated and shot with the Holoset (Chromatte) quite a bit. I have both blue and green ring kits and brought it to the Los Angeles RED Test (LART).

I shot some tests there with the blue ring because my green ring was too small to fit on the lens. (They make various size LED rings). So we should be seeing those results fairly soon.

The Chromatte is a nice option to have in certain situations, since you are lighting the backdrop with the LEDs and not traditional lights. This allows you more flexibility since you don't have to have lights dedicated to getting rid of shadows on the BG.

There are caveats however, such as anything very reflective (chrome, eye glasses must be angled), talent must get used to the LED lights, can sometimes interfere with other on-camera accessories (certain teleprompter setups, etc) and distance requirements (the system has a dimmer box for dialing down the spill in low light / closeup situations)...

But overall, a good way to quickly setup a professional key in a matter of minutes. I shot a bunch of promos for Budweiser on Chromatte and they loved the results.

David,
If you're talking about the Reflecmedia system and your background is "splotchy" be advised that the fabric is moderately delicate. If you get worn/damaged areas on your fabric you can make them like new again with this great 2" tape Reflecmedia makes that has the reflective material on one side. Use it sparingly, it's more expensive than gold! Just stick it on the affected area and---good as new! There are also various generations of reflective fabric out there. I believe the latest is either Gen. 3 or 4. Older fabric will give you greatly diminished results. I've yet to demo our systems to anyone that didn't go "Wow!" when I first turn it on. Best green/blue screen option out there for Red or any high end HD camera.

Hi David,

I've been using various software from Final Cut and After Effects plugins to Trinity GlobeCaster hardware for SD. With pro lighting and quality Cameras, I have never had a problem pulling a key with the Chromatte / Litering. If anything, I may have needed to adjust for the floor on a full body shot and that took longer to dial in, but it always worked out in the end.

Do any of you know how well Reflecmedia works outdoors? Does the way you have to use the system change at all if you shoot in natural light outside?

this wont work outdoors, you have to see this the same as a stop sign, you ono how during the day a stop sign isnt reflective but at night it reflects light so well, its the same exact thing. u need to do it in studio conditions. also i think people dont realize how much the green ring lights up the actual talent, so be wary of this. it is a light after all and if youre too close and dont have enough light to counter the 10 watts of light, it will be a green light on the talent as well.

thatsd being said its freaking great.
buy it at dve store its the cheapest you can find it $1500+ for the whole system with a big screen. those gusy are great
