  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reel from my first feature!

Thank you for sharing.
I like the natural look of your pictures. It´s a pleasure to see your sensitive way to use the light, the natural and the artificial. For me, you´re not obvious as a DP in those pictures, and I mean this as a compliment. It seems you can hold yourself back from "stylish, fast effects" one would normally like to show in his first feature. You are 100% awake to support the story with your art. Kudos to such a first attempt! It looks like you are a good and very talented team player.
Cheers
Marc

My only critique is that it needs a well deserved grade...it's going to come up amazing, and at 1:36 I feel like you could have done better....(such a cool scene with her laying her pills out in a row!) haha...not that it's not cool, but compared to the rest of your camera moves and compositions - you've set the bar very high, so I'm just judging things from the same height ;) Also, out of curiosity, what was the longest lens used in that reel? Seems like you favour the wide, even for close-ups?

Several scenes are dark like in :20 and :30 I don't know if it was intentional so it's not easy to give you advice. If I could see the movie then I could tell. In general all looks good to me.

Thank you all for the kind words! Any critiques?

Without seeing the whole piece it's hard to give a critique. These are selects, so obviously you've put your best foot forward. :)

And they are lovely.

So I don't have any critiques, but I do have some direction: play with light that's not so beautiful. Look at Igor Martinovic's work in season 2 of House of Cards. Look at the way he lets things happen with people silhouetted against windows, or moving into shadow. It's not always the perfect light, but it's brilliant. The world is filled with imperfect light. Your work feels like it could take that direction easily, and it will work really well for narrative films. It seems a natural progression from where you are now (based only on this collection of selects, of course.)

I wouldn't suggest this to just anyone, but I think your work is really solid, and I think you could take it in this direction and make it work. BTW, Igor lives in your part of the world. You might be able to look him up and talk with him about how he thinks about a scene. Could be interesting.

Best of luck.

Great advice above from D Fuller.
Make sure you´ll get the final cut to do a CC yourself, and if its only for your own purpose to test, learn and play around to see what´s all possible with it.

Yeah, I did a grade myself, but I'm far from a colorist. I'm looking forward to getting a pro on board once the edit is complete! At 1:36 do you mean the grade could have been better or the shot isn't at the same level of the rest of the reel? Honestly I never intended to include the pill shot, but I had several people tell me they liked it... I personally never thought it was anything that great, but included it just because it was a bit different compositionally than the rest of the reel.

IIRC, the longest lens in this reel was a 50mm, but even that was used sparingly. The 25mm was probably my biggest workhorse, and we used the 15mm quite a bit as well. The film is a pretty intense psychological drama, and I loved the uncomfortable look that we got from tight close ups on a wider lens.

As everyone mentioned before... breathtaking. Amazing lighting. Great work! When does the Feature release?
