  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedWideGamutRGB: discuss!

RWG and RG10 are accesible in 12.5.3, I am just not sure if it is the very latest version.

David

Yeah, get them even on 12.5.2. Just asking because Graeme makes mention that Resolve is not using the latest V2 of the SDK. (using a corrective input LUT to bring it up to date)

We're hoping that if and when Resolve updates their RWG/L3G10, they offer the choice between V1 and V2.

Hey guys,

i'm not finding the option in the master settings inside premiere pro, to select neither log 3g10 as gamma nor redwidegamut as colour space.
I need to deliver a ProRes export to grade in these settings. In red cine-x pr (build 42) i can select these settings, with advanced settings checked. I save the rmd, open premiere, select the clip, select "load from rmd" and still nothing.

Any suggestions/help?

Thanks in advance!

If you select the clip on your timeline and go to Effect Control, you can change the development settings.

See this screenshot.

Same with the gamma curve: http://imgur.com/a/mp402
I have installed the latest Red Cine-X Pro (42 / not the beta 50) and the Apple Software kit.

I also changed the RMD settings in RCX for all clips to Log 3g10 and Redwidegamut, saved the RMDs, but when i click on "load from rmd" in premiere, it doesnt work.

That's strange. Load from RMD works for me...
Have you tried using the As Shot option and than trying to load from RMDs?
I seriously have no idea why these 2 options do not appear in Premiere Pro...
I wish I could help more. Will have to think about this one a bit more...

I worked around it. When i imported the same videoclips anew, it showed the new RMDs from IPP2. However, when i set the files to offline and then re-linked it didn't change any of the RMD settings.
So i copied the Master settings from the newly imported file, selected the "old" project files and pasted the settings onto them. That did the job... Looks like there's something wrong with the way premiere is refferring to the RMD's.

Tried that too. When i click on "as shot" it changes them to what i've shot. (red gamma 2, dragon color 2)
When i change the settings (i.e. iso 2000) and then click on "load from rmd" it changes everything back to the same settings as "as shot".
So in premiere, the RMD's are referring to the vanilla rmds that were inported directly after the shot.
So emaybe rcx is saving the rmds to a different folder than what premiere is picking from?
Any way to check that?

So the workflow would be to shoot in REDWideGamutRGB + LOG3G10 then apply a LUT, and then grade?
Where my current workflow is just shooting in DRAGONcolor2 + REDgamma4?
Always a LUT after you work in a LOG environment?
Sorry if it's an extreme n00b question, but I am confused!!

That's pretty much it, although for best results you'd want to have your order of ops as:

1) RWG/Log3G10
2) grading
3) Output Transform LUT

That way you're grading in neutral space and can swap out the LUT to easily convert to HDR or a different colour space or whatever.

So the RWG/Log3G10 + LUT approach is for the non-grading oriented workflows?

We have to distinguish between order of operations and workflow. In all cases the preferred order of operations (the order the various stages of the image come in) are as follows:

1) Primary raw development to RWG/Log3G10
2) Grading:
A) CDL
B) Curves or other grading
C) creative 3D LUT
3) Output to desired colour and gamma space

If you're not grading you can just do 1) and 3) above, or even easier do it "all in one" with REDCine-X which will apply the desired output transform as math.

If you're grading I'd suggest either generating a starting file with RWG/Log3G10 or asking for the grading app to decode the R3D as RWG/Log3G10 and putting the desired output transform as an output or monitor LUT thus at all times you are grading ahead of that output transform, rather than after. (Of course, applying the output transform as a LUT directly will work, as will grading after the LUT, but it's not the preferred method).

Graeme, since the latest beta build of RCX has done away with the gamma corrected Post Saturation in the IPP2 pipeline and the Saturation slider seems to behave in a similar, post-gamma fashion (Hallelujah, praise Cheebus), will/can the SDK change as well, such that the RAW controls Saturation slider in Resolve (and others) has the same gamma corrected response?

I hope so. I feel that pre-gamma Saturation was the cause of many an unfortunate grade.

Or, does something about how the new image pipeline is structured cause the saturation to behave in a more pleasing manner by default?

I looked at the same image in Legacy Mode with the pre-gamma Saturation slider cranked to 2.0 in both DRAGONcolor2/REDgamma4 and RWG/Log3G10 and the latter produces better looking (no sickly green skin) results. If IPP2 is the reason, will/should that carry over to Resolve for the RAW controls Saturation slider?

Thanks for this Graeme can you suggest the best work flow for at acquisition specifically for a scarlet w

Thanks

Suresh

I don't think there's anything specific for workflow - either record RWG/Log3G10 to ProRes or DnXHD, or R3D as normal and set to RWG/Log3G10
