Hey guys,

Sorry if this question has been posted before. I searched but couldn't find anything.

To those 'in the know' - can I ask how long a REDVOLT housed in the DSMC Side Handle will power my (pending) EPIC-X for with only the SSD Side Module (with 64GB REDMAG) and 5.0 LCD Touchscreen attached - and a lens obviously.

(As an average, assuming pretty standard shooting time and idle time)

Also, how long does a REDVOLT usually take to charge? I need to work out how many I will need.

Cheers in advance

Yep, that's about right. Very useful for guarding power while using V-locks or A/C, as well as handheld stints. Will also be great with the battery module.

You may get frustrated if trying to use them as an alternative to V-locks.

A Epic owner friend shared that for a full day shooting you would need at least 6 Redvolts, with 4 travel chargers constantly working. I'm going for 5 and 2 chargers. I know this will make my productions last about an hour and a half / 2 hours of continuous shooting, but that's the budget I have right now . I would say get as many redvolts as you can. And don't forget you have to switch batteries, which mean needing to turn of the camera.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I also have 4 Red Bricks but was going to sell them. Do you think I should hang on to them? How long will a Red Brick power the epic with the config I said?

Keep the Red Bricks Damian, they power the camera for 2+ hours, and i use them all the time on the Epic - i only use the redvolts for lightweight jib shots etc . . . where weight is an issue and for hot swap power.

I have to say that I read all these posts about red volts and my opinion is the same. Why are people so into them? The way I see it - the use for them is if you truly want to go lightweight and keep one in the side handle. The rest of the time we're on red bricks - or actually ALL OF THE TIME - so far we haven't had a set up, in for example, a car, where it might call for the cam to slim down even more. That's where I see it truly needed? With the modules coming out I have to say I - so far - have the same opinion. They will make the camera larger and they will not really be less of a weight to a redbrick solution. Where you can actually decide where on the camera you want it. Charge up time is long on the redvolts. So you need many of them - You can easily go through a normal shooting day on around 3 red bricks - 1st one has charged when the 3d is used up - if a 4th period is needed. So my conclusion/ suggestion is to have redbricks for normal operation and when it calls for - have the wonderful solution with a side handle and a redvolt - to make some really tight handheld stuff.

I'm planning on going mainly redvolt for the type of work I do and to use it with my glidecam smoothshooter, jib and slider. However, I do have anton Bauer Gold Mount batteries for when I need those long takes/ no downtime shooting scenarios.

One of the biggest breakthroughs of the Epic/Scarlet is the capability of going lightweight and "stealth", something that was reserved for DSLR's and small sensor cameras before. Its certainly a matter of shooting style and in what applications and situations you plan to use the camera. Both powering solutions have their place. i would certainly recommend the original poster NOT to sell his redbricks, though!

I love the redvolts - have a stack of them.

Economics are fine too, given that you'd be foolish to call the camera complete without the side handle IMHO.

3 x Red bricks (7hrs run time), Brook's APU plate, Red charger - $2600
3 x Redvolt four packs (6hrs run time), four travel chargers - $2750

The situation will change entirely with the release of the battery modules and quad charger, hang in there.

Laying out gear for a job and thought of this thread.
Mmmm redvolts. Addictive, like potato chips from packet to mouth.
