Hey all - if you're a parent, I'm curious what you do to show your daughter or son your work (and try to get them interested in your passion!).

I have a 7 1/2 year old son, and bought a book recently called "This Book is a Camera" (linking not working: https://kellianderson.com/blog/2015/11/24/the-book-is-a-camera-really/)

We need to get some supplies, but I'm excited to show him how pinhole cameras work!

Aside from that, I showed him how he could film himself "disappearing" with two shots, and editing it together with a cross-fade. He loved it.

Anything else you've found out there in terms of resources, or any projects you've created to kick things off with your kid(s)?

My kid is super savvy at 8 years old as she grew up around a tonne of camera gear. She's preparing her own Youtube channel. This last weekend I finally brought my camera to the park and just filmed them being kids. It reminded me of the old days when my Dad would bring out his old film camera.

That was fun - I hope they appreciate the really cool slow-mo shots! Much better than what my dad did - hand-holding the VHS camcorder and asking us a bunch of questions while we were trying to play!

Terrific video, Bob! I had to watch it without sound, though.

Edit: Brendan, I once used a kind of light sensitive paper that is developed in water. It comes under different brands but one is SolarGraphics. It's quite fun and I really should make use of it again.

Just the last couple weeks we picked up a ton of film for my wife's Fuji Instax Mini, and we've been taking it with us on outings to the park and such, letting the 3 yr-old snap some exposures. He absolutely loves it. And for 3 yrs old he's not half-bad! So far almost all of his shots have been framed up ok haha

The app Musicaly started my 12 year old interest in filming when she was 8 or so. She got my old iPhone when she was 10 and filmed a lot with that. The she saw all these kids making Youtube channels. I set one up for her (checking all the Privacy settings etc). I thought her how to film with my Sony a6000, and I gave her and her friend a 15 min lesson in FCPX. Two hours later they had edited their first film, added music and sound effects (I didn't show them how to do that, they figured it out).
Its amazing that a kid can use the same software I use professionally for editing 8K R3D after just a 15min introduction. Blew my mind.
A 7 year old might be a little young to get a smartphone ( as my 7 year old wouldn't be able to take care of it), but I think a smart phone is the best camera for a kid

You can get a 7yo an older secondhand iPod Touch, which is basically the same as an iPhone! But without the "phone" part.

I've always let my boys play with my cameras and showed them how they work. My 7.5 year old is pretty good with cameras, we've filmed a few school projects together with him presenting, editing together. My 2.5 year old mainly likes playing with tripods!
