  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDUSER used to be so BAD ASS.

+ 1 for Owners Section. However, I think it's important to keep theis site accessible. Having all this information and free flow of sharing experiences and workflows was one of the main points that push me towards an Epic and made me absolutely at home with the camera when it arrived. This forum has been a great tool to show that red is a user friendly camera and it's agreat slice of information to clear some of those old red myths. Food for tought!

Agreed Sergio,

The Epic Ops guide is my quick-reference manual, for the in-depth stuff, I come here to Reduser. Without this site, these cameras would lose functionality.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm a RED veteran, I'm only staring out to learn and work with RED cameras, having my own Scarlet and an Epic that I can rent from a buddy of mine.

I don't write plain stupid posts (at least I think so), I read 10 times more than I write, always trying to find a solution for any problem by myself before crying out loud on the board.

I want to learn as much as possible, I want to hear what wise and experienced people (those who you listed in your first post) have to say.

So you're suggesting that I should be cut from this "old Reduser" group just because I've been working with RED cameras for not such a long period of time as you or other people do? Or because I'm not in any union as of yet, or because I've not worked on any major feature film yet?

I get your frustration, even I can feel that the amount of unnecessary posts has increased, but I don't get the "elitism" vibe that is a part of your suggestion.

I'd think all you really need to do is limit posting in some sections to owners and/or people that pay extra; let the rest of the people still read the posts, so they can get the information too.

P.s. I 100% agree the quality of the site has gone down since Nov 3.

Demitri

I am not suggesting REDuser its self changes.
Only that perhaps another forum is made or a link within this forum is made and an extension.

Its more of a membership,
You can call it elitism if you like, the attempt it so get the elite ones to join so they can communicate more clearly on a simplified more filtered forum.

No cutting from any other forum, perhaps a new different location for others to visit.
One that is not just wide open.

Guys this isn't sensor science (see what I did there?).

Just make a registered owners sub-forum.

+1 for the owners section.

It could either be a paid option, or an automatic add in from your serial number. So when you get your EPIC, your added to the owners section as a privilege. I agree tight BigLu that the number of posts from EPIC users has gone down. There is a lot of things that people post, that, with a little research using the search option, they could find. I've found tones of things like that. One example is the RED Watchdog function when there has been a firmware update. That questions seemed like it was being posted a few times a day for a week or so.

I also agree with Ketch where the Owners section should be available for anyone to view - helps with the learning process, but not aloud to post.

Either way, I'd pay for a Owners section if a cost is needed.

Can I add another option of a FAQ section where very common questions are asked that is then very prominent on the front page???

:))

I'd like to second Erich's suggestion. To me, a read-only aspect to the forum/membership would be beneficial in many ways.

It would allow many of us, including myself, to continue to learn from the more experienced members. Perhaps that's a little selfish, but it could help reduce noise longer term, as newer members get a acquainted with the 'tone'.

I'm similar to Demetri - low post-count, mainly because most of my questions have already been asked and a quick search gets me moving again. Losing that I feel, would diminish a unique and enriching forum. One of the many exciting things about owning Scarlet for me, was that after years of watching, I'd be able to join the conversation in a more meaningful way.

I agree with you 100% however and understand where this comes from - the experience of coming here has been diminished by the noise and I do hope that something is done.

+1 for an "OWNERS" section that can be read by everyone but only actual REDONE & Epic owners can post comments and create new threads.

And then create the RED Academy (bear with me), where membership would be by invitation or recommendation by other RED Academy members. Jarred and the REDuser mods know who the players are that should be included/invited. This way non-RED owners, who are real assets to REDuser, can post in the "OWNERS" section as well - We all know who they are so I won't list them, but they are one of the main reasons I come back to this forum everyday.

This way other REDusers, Scarlet owners, etc.. are not excluded from the knowledge and insight that I'm sure this new section would contain.

Just food for thought.

I would really love REDuser to go back to how it was just 2 years ago. The quality of posts and sharing of knowledge was immense.

All the best,

I say let this forum continue to evolve naturally, without interference, without discriminatory ideas of treating aspiring individuals and us humble Scarlet owners like children of a lesser god; that would really sour things for many of us. The idea of having to pay to share in the wonders of this journey we're all on, is appalling to me. I was under the impression that this place is a gift for us all to share,; a place where we, the yet unsophisticated, uneducated, inexperienced and unschooled, can learn, each at his/her own pace. I mean, anyone here is free to ahead and create a different forum where only "la creme de la creme" will be allowed to exercise the "privilege" to post ...but please don't disturb this groove

How about subscription based and, if your posts gather 100 point in a year, the subscription is free. You get -100 points and you are limited to one post a week. Or, something along those lines. Good funnies score double points :)

Hi@ll,

I also liked the old reduser.net. Learned and followed it many years though I never posted smth. I finally got now my Scarlet after many years of waiting and to me the Scarlet Section is a complete mess. Filled with Threads like #...arrived blablabla.

Some of us Scarlet Users already fouund us a new home at a facebook Page, where we help each other and when we dont now a solution for some problems we post here in this forums to keep it clean.

I think the subscription paying solution will not bring back the old reduser. It will more destroy it. The forum was one of the reason why I bought me into the Red eco-system. I knew that when I've a problem I can post (if i dont find an already existing solution) here. THats what makes Reduser.net so special and after some time the big wave of new scarlet owner with stupid problems will calm down.

Just my thoughts.

I agree Jaadgy. Funny thing is, I remember reading many posts by members here who today consider themselves hardened professionals, asking the exact same stupid questions just a few short years ago and I think it's a good thing they have grown as filmmakers through using this resource.

There has always been a high signal to noise ratio on Reduser. Yes it has got worse lately; it was always going to with the release of Scarlet and other large sensor cameras from Sony, Canon et al. My solution is to take the real names principle one step further and have signatures that accurately reflect peoples jobs. Too many on here claim they something they are not (and no, this is not a pop at you Ketch - your signature always makes me smile:). My reasoning being that if you know the level that someone is working at, student, hobbyist, Oscar winner or whatever then the threads will better reflect conversations in the real world.

My 10p.

Hey Big Lu...
I was typing the same exact thing about a week ago... But thought it might be taken completely out of context so I deleted it.
I'm glad you had the balls to post your thoughts.

At the end of the day it's in Jarred and Jim's best interest to bring RU back into its former glory.
I'm really glad they responded favoribly.

I spend enough time on REDUser that $200 would be justifiable. But conversely I spend enough time on REDUser that I don't think I should have to pay $200 haha.

I don't see an "owners only" forum doing any good.

1) Most high-end DPs rent. So what you're saying is "David Mullen is wasting our time."
2) The noise you complain about is mostly coming from owners anyway.

The largest problem is just duplicate topics. And some of that is inconsiderate and lazy posting (See the 5-6 threads on the front page of one section right now all on Blackshading and noise).
And some of that is caused by the fact that REDuser now is overly spread out.

There is a thread for selling stuff. And there is a thread for selling RED branded stuff. Redundant much? People constantly get confused and post in the wrong one.

There is a complaint department... and a bugs and problems forum.

There is a Cinematography thread... Eh? And an Audio thread? There's still a RED Ray thread and Post-Production hardware thread which both go essentially unused. There is a Fashion Photography SPECIFIC forum. And there is yet another forum now devoted to people who bought Epic-Ms.

So if you have a post like "When should I blackshade" which is a reasonable question... asked ONCE. You could hypothetically post it in Epic and Scarlet since both would have the exact same answer--and even feasibly RED Discussion since it's "All things RED"... but what if you are shooting fashion photography should you also discuss blackshading as it relates to a fashion photographer?

It's way too much information spread out across way too many different pages to stay up to date. I don't even remember where most discussions took place and have to go to my own profile to figure out where an interesting recent conversation was located. There is a temptation to categorize everything... but there is really something to be said for a single junk drawer where you know it's in there and you just need to find it as opposed to 10 junk drawers.

That's funny, It's weeks I want to say this... The newbie thing is killing the spirit. I don't want this to create segregation between Epic and Scarlet owners, but I think some new members just don't know was was created here and how it has grown... Most of us "know" and respect each other, and there's a huge level of trust among opinions and experiences among the first generation of Redusers.

On the other hand, a paying subscription is sort of against the spirit here... It's not a money issue, but I like the fact that this is free and open.

Even though the Scarlet is the best priced camera for what it can do anywhere you can find on a professional level.
( powerful as hell ) It has RUINED REDUSER to the point where it has made REDuser suck in so many ways.

The Scarlet posts, complaints, bitching, crying, cheap ass comments, uneducated or unnecessary posts, and lots of bull shit has over taken the useful, educational, troubleshooting, helpful posts by a long shot.

There is a clear separation between the Professionals and those whom went from a 5D to a Scarlet.
This makes me want to post less and read less. A move in the negative direction.
I see far less posts by RED team members and far less posts by EPIC and REDone owners whom usually had informative things to say over the years.
Now that maybe because there is so much more talk about Scarlet on here or they actually feel the same way i do, perhaps even a touch.

LET ME BE CLEAR.
I have friends whom have Scarlets and they don't come up with wasteful stupid ass posts.
So there are a large amount of Scarlet owners whom do get it and learn or contribute.

This watering down of REDuser has forced a clever friend of mine to make a private invite only group on the internet for Owner operators to share information with and its been successful, its small and we like it that way.
So
Instead of getting pissed off at some of you guys whom just don't have a clue because they really don't. And adding to your dumb ass post.

IM REACHING OUT TO JARRED cuz he's the man who makes things like this happen.

Can you come up with a PAID Reduser that carries a membership where you have to actually pay for please?
Its the only thing I could come up with that will help weed out the bad and hopefully bring back the guys I like to read and reach out to.
Its my feeling that industry pros may find this of value.
Its the guys whom have like 2 or more REDone MXs
or an EPIC(s) with plenty of support.
The guys whom have been doing this for years not just this year.
The post editors or colorist whom work as a editor or colorist for a living.
The DITs whom have REDrockt systems whom work as DITs for a living.
The ACs and operators whom are UNION.
The rental shops whom have multiple cameras and experience real problems and have real solutions whom don't mind sharing.
The 3rd party developers whom make stuff id like to actually find and BUY.

Its just too hard weeding out the BS.

Its my feeling that we will be down in users by a large percentage.
But this will in-fact just provide more useful posts / feedback.
Small but strong and we can continue to provide useful feedback to RED on real potential bugs.

I strongly suggest you charge $100 - $200 per year for access to this PRO like forum. I have my $CASH ready to go.
If one cant afford it its probably not for them yet.
If one hates paying that money and they do have cameras thats ok they do not have to join.
BLAME ME this was my swing at trying to find a solution to this problem.
If too many non EPIC owner operators join then the price point was too low and i hope you have a solution for that.

RED employees of course would never pay, its a fact they are the most HELPful people on here left and right.
Maybe Mr Jannard will be encouraged to reply more often if more valid progressive posts come up.

All I know is
REDUSER used to be so BAD ASS.
Please do something.

Luis Flores

FYI I happy to pay

I think Owner's Section is a good idea.

Better still is a Newbie section, in which guys who actually bought the Scarlet or are going rent one for their production can come and ask questions (because they would like to up their productions). This way, it does not feel like a snub.

My two cents. Hope it helps.

A members section may be better though, there's only one way in and verifiable. It's such a useful resource when you can cut through the junk
