  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

reduser... Just educate me... please

Not that I want to derail this thread, but the duration of user bans vary on a case by case basis. Sometimes they are temporary, sometimes permanent. Temporary bans can be a simple warning shot that puts the user in a time-out for a few days or a month or so. I think we are rather tolerant here and probably let a lot more slide by than we should. OTOH Reduser continuously surprises me as to how well everyone gets along. Rarely does it degenerate to a point where I feel I have to do a whole lot to moderate. Not much more so than simply reminding people to play nice or to engage a disruptive member in a sensible way. I don't really want to talk about Harry, but he's the example of the moment. Open warnings and attempts to steer his thread to a more rational tone had no effect so he earned some time off.

EDIT: Re-using the search doesn't work. I guess the search isn't persistent.

I think there may be a way to get part of the functionality.

Click search, advanced. Click search single content type.
Set the following:
attachment.php


Save the search preferences.

Search. You should get a url that looks like this http://www.reduser.net/forum/search.php?searchid=...some number...

I think that url is your user number and search type, and runs your default advanced search with the most recent saved settings. So in *theory* you may be able to just bookmark that link and use that custom searchid.

Still not quite as slick, but as long as the all the marketplace crap has a prefix, this may work.
The other problem is that it doesn't really sort by the newest stuff first.

A, +1000 on not seeing WTB/FS in New Posts : )

B, Josh, I hear you on education as well. Here is where it is a little tricky. Just like with releasing beta firmware, we can only do so much testing in-house, but need you 1000's of REDUSERS banging away on it to get feedback over a variety of use cases. Same with education. We can only anticipate so much as to what matters to you guys. A lot of time user-generated content to massively supplement REDucation and what RED posts online is the way to go. That is 1000's of people who can generate content. We are just 400 people in all of RED : )

But, just like two years ago, we have little online content, we will continue to push ourselves to get better and do more on our end as well.

You don't need to cover every aspect and go in depth. Basic elements covered would help in avoiding a lot of confusion, misconceptions and FUD.

Once people interested in your system grasp the logic behind the imaging appartus and workflow further education is not necessary from your side. If you go explaining each particular, more particulars are likely to emerge needing to be explained. If you explain the main logic, particulars can be individually tried and deducted knowing how the system works.

Right now you have useful and well done material but randomly chosen and without a systematic order, and main topics covered with systematically arranged concise info videos would help you guys a lot.

Something along the lines of:

1. Red camera fundamentals

- sensor technology
- processing logic
- processing pathways
- RAW principles
- internal hardware summary
- .r3d explained, bit rates, compression, file sizes


2. Camera operation & UI

- navigation (UI tree animation)
- settings with immediately visible results (camera settings + picture settings + monitoring settings etc)
- I/O options
- expansion options (advanatages of modularity concept)

3. Post workflow options

- ingest
- metadata
- RCX
- few clip sample workflows for each platform
- hardware components summary

For many professionals and more experienced users a large part of this is not necessary, but your products are targeting few different market segements, where experience with this particular approach, pre-conceptions and expectations vary.

#1 Would mostly require simple graphic animations and one camera shooting another with a narrator would be enough.

#2 Would require three camera shoot + narrator (one camera for the wide shot of the camera operator, one for the camera monitor and one being shot and shooting a studio scene), + simple graphic animations + results from the main camera.

#3 Would require a narrator, one camera for wide shot of a post production setup, edited with computer's screen capture.

One example which would end one confusion which seems to be repeating every once in a while is related to ISO.
A video showing changing the ISO value with histogram and post results (same scene light values + scene light changing for correct exposure per each ISO value) would do the trick.
 
Hrvoje, you have some great suggestions. Which leads me to another topic (btw, I am fully aware that I am doing what I hate others doing, thread sideswiping, haha).

The fact that a lot of your suggestions are already on RED.com. Like, Dan has hit most of your post workflow suggestions and his method is actually as you describe - narrator with screen grabs/walkthroughs. We have hit a lot of the other stuff as well, like camera UI Launch Sequence we did you suggest in #2. And our Learn articles tackle a lot of #1.

That all being said, after we get through a lot of work for NAB, our web team will be looking at doing a big overhaul of how our educational/learn stuff is presented and categorized on RED.com. Right now, kinda a clusterf**k, we know, and it is on our radar. We can have a bunch of great resources online, but if no one can find them, what good are they?

Lastly, Nate and Sean are cooking up a little project that will address some of what you and others have posted about. Early stages and they are pretty busy running around sets shooting on DRAGON, but do stay tuned : )
