In the New Posts view, it would be nice if next to the person's name who created the thread if the date of creation could be listed as well.

Rational: When I haven't see a thread before and it's already got a bunch of comments, I can't tell if it's a new thread that "took off", or if it's an old thread that someone decided to post "LOL, totally!" on.

If the creation date was on the thread, I could avoid clicking onto an old thread and save bandwidth. :-)

Not a bad idea...

What I've always wanted here is thread expiration. Or threads will automatically lock themselves if no one has posted to them in X amount of days. That would keep people from resurrecting old threads all the time...

And deletion of threads... then the numbering system becomes so screwed up... articles/links that people post linking to threads on here that go to a thread about something completely different, can't find anymore because a mod deleted a thread made prior to it, screwing up the numbering system....

My little rant

Numbering system? When a thread is generated it gets an ID number that is unique, same with posts. Deleting threads/posts doesn't alter any numbers. If we delete a thread, and if someone has linked to it, unfortunately that link won't work anymore, because the thread is gone. Not much we can do about that. Typically the only time threads get deleted is if the discussion gets out of hand with personal attacks. Most other discussions, like run-away discussions on other cameras, will usually get locked and not deleted. If the thread disappears, there's usually a good reason.

If your'e referring to actual displayed numbers within a thread or within a forum as in thread #1, 2, 3, etc.. Post within a thread #1, 2, 3, etc.. and if you're referencing those, then you're just asking for potential error anyway. Kinda like trying to reference a post within a thread by saying it's on a certain page. For some people, the 33rd post may be on Page three, for others it still could be on page 1, depending on how they have their view options set up.

Anyway, I know people often question why threads or posts get deleted. It's always with a reason, sometimes it may not be apparent. But there's a reason. You lost me with the numbering system thing... There are a lot of old links that go to incorrect threads... Perhaps that is what you are referring to? There was a major crash on Reduser.net a bit over a year ago and when the forum was rebuilt, many of the old links were no longer valid -- due to a complete re-numbering of all threads in existence. A few important ones were identified and fixed, but most were not. Would take forever...

Jeff.

Sometimes those followups are interesting...

Followups are fine. It's when someone resurrects threads from a year ago that would now contain erroneous information pertaining to workflow or camera specs, etc.. I'm not saying threads should lock themselves shortly after. Maybe like a few months. Followups usually work better after a few months if someone starts a new thread and references the old one... usually, not always.

If we were to do an expiration thing, I think it could be set differently for different forums areas. I don't know, I just see that there are times when it would be useful. ...As would the date feature Erich brought up.

Are you hoping for "VFS Inclino, Imperio, Origo News ??" thread to go away?

I don't really agree with that, I think it could potentially result in people just remaking the same threads over and over again because it lost interest for a couple of days, it can be pretty slow in forums sometimes and good topics can become overlooked for a while.

What I mean, I'll try to find an example... but someone posts link to a blog, showing maybe a RECON thread, of something in the "SHOT ON RED" forum.... sometimes that thread is still on reduser, but the link has brought me to another thread altogether, and it's been on a few sites, so its not just the bloggers error...

It seems after a certain point, if a thread is deleted somewhere, the numbering system somehow screws up for old threads

I think I understand... But that actually has nothing to do with threads being deleted. If you could reference a specific example it would be easier to try and diagnose.

The only times I've seen this happening are when external sites or even threads within the reduser forums, reference threads/posts from about last June or before, before the site crash.

Thats probably it.... the site crash... that could explain everything

Actually if you try to search this forum via google, tons of the results that often come up are cached and reference the site pre-crash. Makes google search of older topics a bit of an adventure.

Whatever the cause, I actually experienced this thread misalignment weirdness when I bought my Red One in December 09. The 'serial number issued' email from Bombsquad links me to a thread 'for the most up to date information blah blah' which is actually a whole other thread about the macbook air... no big deal, forums are what they are lol!

I wonder if that little craziness still exists?
