What does everyone think about having a RedUser Awards 2008?

RedUsers would establish and vote on different categories: music video, doc, indie feature, studio feature, etc.

I don't know if we could actually make trophies or maybe a cool custom avatar-type of award. Maybe a statuette of Jim in action with his Red and 300mm (we'll sort out if it's in the matte or shiney finish later. j/k!). Maybe "Buzzsaw Red" or "Mysterium" statuettes...

Of course, the only requirement is that it must be shot on Red! :)

I second that motion! Great idea....can it be presented at RED Fest?

Good idea.

There should be clip categories, too. Like best slo-mo clip, best sunset sunset clip, best timelapse, etc. :)

what about best asa320 clip, best shuter 1/24,best shot with most blue in it...

have you ever heard of a festival that celebrates a movie based on what it has been shot ? i think some people had a discussion about this in some other post it just doesent make seens.a camera is only a tool to tell stories.not the tool should be celebrated on a film festival ,the storys should.

I think you missed the point. There are already tons of festivals/awards that recognize great stories; irregardless of what it's shot on. And it is inevitable a great story has been and will be shot on Red and recognized in a big way.

But this idea is about a "RedUser" award. It's for FUN within a community of users to acknowledge each others efforts.

More then likely a winner of a RedUser award will probably have done the festival circuit and maybe won there too.

You don't even have to submit. So soderbergh's stuff will be up for an award too. I wonder if he'll win a RedUser award. :)

But I like the clip idea because obviously it won't be shown at festivals... but the idea definitely captures what this awards could be about... just having some fun, acknowledging and encouraging each other as RedUser... who are creating great stuff (even as short as a clip) with a great "tool".

And why can't a tool be celebrated? What about the oscar in technological achievements?

And I've seen other "art" forums who have special "trophy" avatars that recognize their exceptional work.

Let's all sing it together... "Real men of genius!"

I love this idea, and I love the idea of awarding for clips because really if these are awards based around Red then what we're mostly recognizing is cinematography (in all that word's interpretations) not storytelling.

Also, the idea that you don't have to submit is a fun one.

A suggestion for the 2009 awards - Most Creative Use of Scarlet

We are already making a 3D model of the Mysterium Logo. It will be 8 inches approx diameter, sit on a stand with the text "Mysterium" coming up from the stand (it will also be hangable on the wall if you choose. It will be printed in White ABS plastic and if people want to make this the Reduser Award, I will look into having them painted up to look like the Photoshop Artwork if we can find a way to pay for them.

I will post a pic of the Printed 3D parts soon when we are done with it.

I like the idea of awards for Red motion photography because the stills guys have been doing it for years. PDN and others give awards to photojournalists and artists based on their images, not on the articles or ads in which they appear. Red users are sometimes just motion photographers a.k.a. cinematographers and not always filmmakers. I for one shoot stock images with the red for others to use in their films, ads etc. Honoring moving photographs is a fun idea.

I like the concept a lot. If there is anyone for whom the idea just doesn't make sense, they can alway just opt out.

A fun Red community event. Nice idea, Jing.
