I am o.k. when Reduser chooses to close a thread it "DEEMS" should not be discussed such as the one started by Joseph Hudson about the passage of the health care bill. But I find it a flagrant abuse of responsible behavior when one of the forum monitors closes such a thread AFTER having the last word and expressing a personal opinion on the subject. This cutting off of debate and ramming the decision through is not palatable when done by Congress and while it is within the purview of Reduser moderators, it still smacks of abuse of authority.

Morning Elsie,

I would have to say that since this is a private enterprise that RED can do as they please. It's the reason I would not make a good bartender. At some point everybody would piss me off and I would throw their asses out. This would result in me having no customers and my establishment going under. All in all I think the RED site is quite fair,

Not thread specific, but I agree with you in principal. Any thread that clearly is not aligned with mission of the forum should be closed. It also would be in good taste and less abrasive for the moderator to close the thread with a boilerplate statement.

Chuck, not protesting the closing of the thread. Just that I read it last night and it was closed after 6 posts. Then I come back this morning and read another post by Martin Weiss where he re-opens it so he can put in his two cents worth and then re-close it.

Gotcha

Elsie, actually the thread was closed before I made my comment. I didn't realize it was closed when I posted, otherwise I wouldn't have made the comment. Post is now deleted.

And just for clarification, none of the moderators are employees of RED, nor do we get paid for doing this job. One of the few privileges we get is being able to post on closed threads, be that intentionally or not. We are not official representatives of RED's policies, implied or real. Reduser is run by Landmine Media, Inc., as it says at the bottom of every page.

All's good Martin. It's just that my ideal of a perfect moderator is someone who is neutral and acts as a referee between competing philosophies. (And that is why I would make a lousy moderator:crazy:)

Since we're all working professionals, I doubt you'll find anyone neutral here. Best hope is to get a wide range of moderators, which I think is the case on this forum.

I think what this whole discussion clearly shows is that we are all passionate about reduser. And that is a compliment to both the owners, moderators and most of all the users.

Yes, understood. That's why I said "ideal perfect moderator."

Elsie,

While reduser is a very public forum, it is not owned by the public. As was staed it is owned by landmine. It is a discussion forum about RED products and a place for people who own RED products to have discussions, etc.

From time to time, things happen in the "real world" that people want to talk about on the forum. The health care debate is a good example. This is not the place to have these types of discussions. It's most likely the position of the owners that it is completely off topic for this forum.

Many current event discussions have had the same fate on other tech forums and have been similarly shut down. This is landmines house and it is moderated by a great group of people. When the conversation is off topic, it's not censorship to remove it because this was never a place to have those conversations.

When I want to venture into these types of discussions I find that e-mail, the telephone or a coffee shop is a better place to have them.

To be very clear. I completely defend anyones right to free speech and would never deny that. This company has every right to control content here because they own it all.

David, this is not about content or rights... it's about moderator behaviour. Martin decided in favor of my position and removed the thread completely and I am in complete agreement with his decision.

Thanks Elsie,

I was not sure about the context. I appreciate the clarity. Just re-read the original post and I get it now.

Just re-read it myself and was at first, unsure what it meant too. And I'm the one who wrote it!!!!:willy_nilly:

In my experience it's especially subjects that have nothing to do with Red and that can make forum members hostile towards each other that get closed very quickly; politics, religion, animal abuse, that kind of thing got closed quickly, and I guess for good reasons. I think there was a thread on Mercedes cars, or other cars, that went on for quite some time?

Since alot of "off topic" topics have to do with the film industry overall. Health care is
a very real specific issue affecting film production workers many whom are not
given health care by a company or union.

As such if there is a federal law that ultimately makes it mandatory for
individuals to buy their own health insurance...it seems a legitimate off topic
issue as it will affect many film production workers in a very real way. $$$

Any thread posted outside the realm of RED is likely to get the hammer... especially politics or religion.

Bandwidth costs money... which is why we also discourage duplicating images in follow up posts. This should be a place to learn about and share RED experiences. There are plenty of places to go to "chit-chat" about almost anything... but this is not the water-cooler.

There are plenty of people that complain about the "noise" here. It is difficult enough to find the useful information posted on this site without having to navigate through a minefield of more "stuff".

This is not a general site about the film industry. This is a site about the RED program.

Agreed...
