Has anyone fixed this problem? I just recovered about 2tb of R3D files. I was shooting long shots, 20 minutes to 1 hour at a time, so the R3D files are all sequential. The problem is that the files in certain sequences are over the 2.15 GB limit. They will not load into any app.

They were recovered form a 5 stripe raid using RedUndead.

Any ideas about how to make these files useable?

thanks,

Shawn

I have tried re-running REDUNDEAD on the same files, but it writes them the same file size as the originals. Some of the files are over 8gb in size!

Any ideas to try?

I don't think RedUndead will deal very well with recovering files from a RAID to be honest. RAID recovery is a very complication laden and expensive business. THe only thing I can say is to bring it to a RAID recovery specialist and hope fo the best, but even they will only have a 60-70% recovery rate.

Yes, I agree. I took the Raid to a recovery specialist, and while about one third of the recovered files were the right size, the rest were too big.

But FYI, I ran REDUNDEAD on the raid, and it was doing a fine job of picking up the files. Problem is, it was not rewriting them to the right size, just copying them.

cheers,

Shawn

When will we be getting a Windows version of Redundead? Haven't needed it yet, but inevitably....

Shawn, I'm unclear on this. Where are you encountering the 2.15 GB limit? Am I understanding correctly that Red Undead did recover the files, but you are unable to use them afterward because of size... not because they aren't recovered?

RedUndead is mostly meant to work on original read media and there's no guarantee that it'll be able to find the files properly. It's less likely to find valid file on another filesystem/drive.

Hi Elsie,

Yes, the RED files were recovered. The problem is that the file segments- where RED breaks the files into 2.15gb chunks on long takes- are over that limit. So neither Red CineX, nor Red Alert, nor Premiere Pro CS5 will load them. All three systems just hang and have to be force quit.

So close, but so far!

Now I understand. Wasn't familiar with how Red Undead works. Deanan's explanation tells me that if I ever get a Windows version:w00t: then I should only expect to use it on the CF card or whatever drive I'm recording to originally.

Afterthought: I can see where this could be a problem for those who rent. Maybe Red could figure some way for the rental houses to wipe the media when it returns... like a military wipe on a HDD where the entire drive is written over at least five times.
